Flames with Monokote
How do some of these people get those nifty flames on their aircraft. I saw one (it's under profile/funfly) with an awesome scheme. Is there a trick to it, do you precut the monokote?

If you want to learn how to make flames buy this book by Faye Stilley, in the book he explains in detail how to make flames and other tricks using monokote. Here is a link to amazon

I have purchased both his books are they are very helpful. My covering skills have really improved since I started using his tips.

Flames with Monokote
I drew flames free hand on the back of the monocote with a sharpie then jst cut along the lines. Turned out great and I got lots of good comments.I must admit I practiced drawing flames on paper first but once get the feel of the flame its easy. Applying the flames was not so easy though I ended up applying them in six inch strips rather than all at once.

flames and monokote
If you'll look at March 2003 Model Aviation page 167 lower right corner that's me and my HP200 my name is miss spelled but thats my HP and she is dressed up in all her glory in red and yellow flames over chrome monokote. Just take your time and decide on what you want your flames to look like and then start cutting them out. Before you apply though make sure that the serface is dirt free and clean of any oil. Turn the heat up on your iron and apply where you want them to be. If you look close you can see some of the flames on my bird.

King,
Once you make flames, you may never do it again. If making many flames, make some lite ply templates, starting with the darkest going to lightest to determine the overlap. I use Ultracoat with great results. Cut and seam all pieces on a glass plate using windex as necessary. I figure to flame my sportster I had to cut about 200 individual pieces.
Won't do it again!!
