What is the advantage of a cannistor muffler over a stock muffler? I hear that cans on a 3w170TSCs will add 2lbs of weight to the airframe? Is this extra weight of the cans worth its performance benefits? whatever they may be?

Ragz, you will pick up about 1.5lbs or so depending on the cans you use (3W LLX cans). However, the 3W engines really like the can systems and are designed around them for best performance since Europe is very noise conscious. You will pick up midrange and top end power. The stock diverters do fine, but the engine really likes the cans IMO. If all you are doing is 3D and trying to keep the plane light, then stock diverters will be fine. Its all a tradeoff. What plane were you thinking about putting one in?

A friend is flying his extra 260 with a da150 and stock muffs. He is super happy with this setup, any comments in performance of the da150 in this airframe vis a vis the 3w 170 ts cs? 3w will be more power, but heavier too..so wing loading will be affected. Da150 on the other hand is lighter but lesser horses.

Ragz, the 157/170 is actually about 2oz lighter than the DA 150, as 3W includes the ignition weight in their figures. Had both and weighed both. The 170 will be the same weight as the 157 (bore and stroke are the only changes). So you will have zero weight penalty for using the 170 over a DA unless you use the twinspark, which will add about 8oz. The twin spark is not necessary IMO. The 157 blows the doors off the DA, the 170 will be even better. I would stick with the 170CS non twinspark and stock mufflers, and will be an awesome combo.
