Loose wing tubes - ideas to fix?
I have a new 30% Yak with a CF wing tube that fit a little loose from the get go. After a dozen flights it's worse. What can I do to tighten this up? I'm looking for ideas that work instead of experimenting and goofing it up.
Thanks,
Joe

How loose Joe?
I have successfully used a clear lacquer to tighten up a loose carbon tube before.
Sand the tube lightly with 600 grit wet, wash the tube down with alcohol and spray with a clear fast dry lacquer. May need a few coates.
I’ve also used a cloth on a dowel to add a smear coat of epoxy resin to the inside of a fuse tube that was loose.

Just take some scotch tape and wrap the tube once on the ends and on the middle section or where ever loose. If it's still loose just add another layer. It's an easy fix or if it's too loose, try and get a new tube from the Mfg.

Hi, name's Ken (Starfighter). Use Ultracote, and/or Monokote (depends on what you have available) and ONLY cover the portion of the tube that is surrounded by the sleeve. It usually only takes 2 - 3 wraps of the material to accomplish the job. This works the BEST, is VERY DURABLE and RELIABLE, and is CHEAP to do.
Remember to CLEAN the tube thoroughly with a solvent, and then cover the area as if you were covering a part of the airframe. I have found that you may have to use a slightly higher heat setting on your iron, but make sure that you have attached AND shrunk the material down well.
I've been doing this for YEARS. (been flying R/C for 43yrs.)

Use a sleeve of the yellow heat shring tubing like is used to wrap a battery pack. It will add about .010" to the diameter.
Get the smallest stuff that will fit over the tube, leave about 1" extra at each end. Use your heat gun to shrink it down, workslike a charm if the sickets are pretty far outsized. Start fromthe center and work your way out doing about a fot in each direction first, then the rest.

I just use plain old scotch tape... wrap it around slightly overlapping... after 200 flights still tight as ever and takes about 30 secs to do.

Ok guys. I tried the Mono coat and it was too thick. Then I tried some scotch tape and two wraps was perfect. I only wrapped the part that goes through the ply holes. Dumb question: Does that fiberglass sleeve really bare any load? When you push or squeeze the sleeve, it flexes. I can't see how it does much compared to the ply holes. Is it to keep the tube from flexing in the middle? I guess I can see how that would add strength.
Also I figured out a way to put those safety clips in hollow CF anti-rotation dowels. Just CA a short wood dowel inside the hollow CF dowel and put the clip on that. It's hard for me to fly a plane without those clips on the anti-rotation dowels. Until I figured out how to put the clips on I was always looking inside the canopy to see if the bolts were backing out. One time I tightened one too much and the threads stripped.....too loose or too tight.....the clips are a must for me.

good idea about the clips. I was wondering what I was going to do about that. I've been flying without them and I always like a backup there. [sm=thumbup.gif]

I have tried the scotch tape thing and find that over time, it is a pain.
It fixes an immediate issue, but you have to remove that tape and it is a problem.
I have started paint the tube to get it to fit.
When it gets loose again, a fine coat of spray paint will fix it.
No muss and no fuss.

Tape will eventually wear & you'll be left with a sticky & gooey mess.
Been there done that.
I agree that spray paint is the best way to go.

Sorry to dig this up from the past guys, but I've got questions too.
I just got a CF tube and it's loose. I called the distributor and he suggested one piece of scotch tape lengthwise from end too end. Sounds good.
But after reading this thread, I'd prefer not to do that. The last thing I want to deal with is a mess of scotch tape glue after it peels off.
So, does anyone have a brand name for the CF spray? Can't seam to find it locally, so I might have to order via internet.
