RE: Savage does not change to second gear
Is your engine fully broken in? If not, your engine will be running too rich to even actuate 2nd gear. Once your engine is fully broken in and you turn for performance, you engine will rev up into the proper RPM bandwidth to deploy the 2nd gear actuating finger. Then your truk will scoot!

RE: Savage does not change to second gear
I have broken the engine in OK.
I have run about 4 gallons of fuel through it now. I am just having this problem.
Do you think I am running too rich?

Try tuning for peformance; but dont go too lean nor too rich. Your engine might need retuning according to your current ambient conditions.
Also, try adjusting your 2nd gear engagenm, ent disc so that it opens sooner. Check you manual on how to do that.

Or it could be something simple checking your spur gear slipper clutch nut hasn't loosened off. The nut should be tightened then backed off 1/8 - 1/4 truns, If it's too loose your slipper clutch will be slipping & not allowing to shift into 2nd. This is a common prob most people overlook

RE: Savage does not change to second gear
That's so true about ths Savage "slipper" clutch. I put "slipper" in quotes because that thing has a bad problem of slipping too easily under load. On my Savages, I crank that nut down all the way and keep is as tight as posible so that it does not slip at all!
I think the slipper clutch was designed for a much weaker engine (the Nitrostar .21BB comes to mind). The torque produced by the newer Nitrostar engines (the F4.1 and K4.6) will simply twist the spur gear suh that the slipper clutch nut will unscrew itself off. Even worse, the torque produced by modern aftermarket engines are so powerful that they can be as much as 50% more powerful than the F4.1 or K4.6.

RE: Savage does not change to second gear
my 3 speed was not shifting, then i slightly tweaked the hsn and it all of a sudden when through 1-2-3 and i heard every single gear change, just by leaning out a little...
runing rich/ lean/ wrong gear bombo/ slipper lose/ wrong idle/ so many thing can be the cause of a simple thing!!..lol
when i think about it its a very hard hobby to fully understand, and even a grub screw can leave people..(me mainly).. wondering how the hell its messing me up...air leaks make me laugh, a silly leak and it can throw anyone of course..lol
when i got my X i stripped it down and rebuilt it before i ran it in, this way i knew every bold and nut in person, manual's can some times be mis- directing!!..lol
hope you work it out dude, .....
wow.. ive kinda gone of track here, sorry!!...[sm=47_47.gif]

Hold off on messing with the trans shift points until you check your tune. A rich tune WILL NOT allow the truck to shift into 2nd.
