Byron F-18 Gear
Does anyone know of a scale like gear I can use in the Byron F-18? I would like to find something that looks good but also will hold up the weight of the model. Thanks all

RE: Byron F-18 Gear
Buddy, I went through all my stuff here and could not find it, but there is a guy out there that makes a fairly great set of legs and retracts specifically for the Byron F-18, I'm remembering back four years now, but as I recall it was only about 400.00 to get them. And they did have carrier style legs a la Yellow Aircraft/ Skymaster style. All aluminum as I recall. Hopefully someone will chime in with the website. Those byron F-18's are getting scarce! I had one about 3 or 4 years ago, painted it blue angels.

The best I can recall, the company is called Custom Crafters, but I have no contact info. I will be looking forward to getting that my self as I need some as well for my turbinized Byron F-18 I am working on. Also, if my memory serves me, the set they make needs a JMP nose gear for their setup. I'll be watching this thread.

RE: Byron F-18 Gear
Thanks for all the input guys. I am getting back into jets and alot has changed since our Byron F-15 and yellow F-4 we used to fly.
The gear from RC Crafters looks really nice, I will have to give them a call Monday morning and see what I come up with. I will post it as soon as I hear something. I want the gear to look pretty close to scale.
I plan on using the BVM dual electric set up for power. I think this will work well, maybe you guys have something better?

RE: Byron F-18 Gear
I had a hard drive go out two years ago, lost all my RC photos, since then I have multiple backups of hard drives, I had backups then, but that particular subdirectory was not considered necessary at the time, what a dunce move.
But it was quite a good looking airplane, sold it to a guy in Hawaii as I recall. If anyone sees this, it would be easy to remember cause the new owner had me litterally cut the jet in half to save on shipping expense, I used a hacksaw as I recall. Said he'd do the glass work and paint patching when it got to Hawaii. I never heard anything after that, and I never did get to build a fly an F-18, I'm still waiting though, patiently!

RE: Byron F-18 Gear
Sorry to hear about the hard drive. I have never heard of anyone cutting a model in half just to save shipping. He must have wanted it pretty bad. Hope to get some answers tomorrow on some gear stuff.
CountryBoy, thanks for the photos, they look really nice.
This have been a really big help. I will post photos soon.

RE: Byron F-18 Gear
I received an email from Ed from RC Crafters. He has a set that should work for the byron.
I talked with SpringAir today and he said they are working on a set, just not ready yet.
I will talk with Eric tomorrow at Robart and see what he says.

RE: Byron F-18 Gear
As i remember on the byron f - 18 the mains were very close to the centre line of the aircraft and it did not taxi or land well in a bit of a cross wind and was always scraping its wingtips on the floor, at least mine did untill i moded the legs by making the retract units mount inwards, so that the legs had more spread when down, it made all the difference to landing and taxing

RE: Byron F-18 Gear
Thanks for all the information everyone. This is what I found out
RC Crafters: $850 for the gear and another $300 for the retracts
Springair: Working on it, maybe done in a month or two
Iron Bay: No trailing link gear, they use the F-15 style
Just some updates.
We may machine these ourselves. I were able to take over a hundred pictures of an F-18 landing gear at the sun n fun airshow. I will let you know if we get something together.

RE: Byron F-18 Gear
OK if that is the case, the Tam's F-18 is actually bigger (90†long, 68" span ) than the Byron (84†long, 57" span ) , still don't know if the gear will fit, but they are awesome gear worth checking out for that Byron.
I have a friend that did a Byron F-18 turbine conversion, it flew great, and another buddy with a kit, but he needs gear too.

RE: Byron F-18 Gear
Hey Matt,
I see you had a friend that did a turbine Byron F-18. Do you know what turbine he used in it? Besides the gear problem, I am looking for a power plant. Electric or Turbine? Not sure yet.
Thanks
