Default Twist 60 info needed----NOW!

Ok Boys & girls..........I know this issue has been beaten to death, but could someone that knows their onions please clarify this issue! I am about ready to take my virgin Twist 60 to the field with the CG set at 150 MM (six inches behind) the LE (as I was told to earlier) but have been reading some posts on it & am seeing that it might be too far aft. I modified the rudder & elevator servos to the rear of the fuse......made a hatch behind the wing bolts....Etc. to get the CG at the above setting. I am considering re-setting it to maybe 5.25 instead of 6.00". Dang....I don't know where I am going to put the battery now if I have to change it. I am not flying 3D. I am a sport flyer & just want a nice flying plane & one that lands like it should with no ballooning. I like to do a few tricks......snaps......rolls......inverted....picn ic table take offs....stall turns.....Etc. but not 3D neccessarily..........

I am using a heavy 1100 MAH nicad pack with a DX7 radio setup. Maybe a smaller & lighter 1650 Hydrimax NIMH pack in it's place would be enough to get the CG more forward..............I made a real nice rear hatch too................dam* dam* dam*

Please reply if you have experiance with this issue.........

Thanks much in advance

If you have 3d experience, I fly at 5 7/8" but for normal sport flying several people prefer 5 1/4 to 5 1/2.

there are several hundred posts dealing with this question. Read them, and then determine how brave you are, and how much money that you have available to replace the plane. I guess it depends on what your likes and wants are. If you are wanting to show everyone that you are a hot pilot, then go for it all. If you like to fly and have relaxing fun and a good time, then be a touch conservative. Not tryin to be smart .. just giving good advice.

You guys are making too big a deal of this. If you are experienced enough to fly a semi 3D plane such as a Twist, half an inch is not going to make or break your flight. Just keep the speed up until you see how it handles.

Not so with my Twist. I have many years experience and the CG set at 150mm is simply too tailheavy for many if not most people.
I originally had mine at 150mm and the ballooning was literally uncontrollable, at times, during landings. I have mine set at 5 3/8" at it will still do everything without the dangerous ballooning.

Happy Landings,

Hey Guys................Thanks much for the reply's. I just this evening changed my CG from 150MM (about 6 inches) to 5 1/4" by moving the battery from behind the trailing edge, to up front under the fuel tank. At 5 1/4" for the CG, it just slightly tips nose down....very slightly...........& that's where I will maiden it hopefully tomorrow evening. I have a brass heavy hub installed, & can switch to an aluminum hub which gave it a bit of tail down balanced at 5 1/4". I have a Goldberg "Extreme 330 Profile" with a OS 50 SX that had the same problem until I moved the CG slightly forward. It will leave the ground in about 5 feet & do everything you can throw at it. It also stopped the balooning while coming in.

I just bought the Twist 150 & will be putting a OS 120 AX in for the power. We will see how that bird comes out.

Again, thanks all for the reply's. Everyone has their own flying style & opinion on this & it dosen't mean anyone is more wrong or right. I guess that we all have to sometimes do our own thing & hopefully it will turn out all right.

CHEERS

OK, guys, please explain what you are calling "ballooning". I know ballooning as what a flat bottom airfoil does when it goes too fast. You are applying the term to a thick symmetrical air foil. This airfoil does not "balloon". So, what are you talking about? Please?

If a plane is too tail heavy, it can pitch up on its own at slower speeds causing the plane to climb (balloon) momentarily until it stalls. To counter act a severe case of ballooning, the pilot may have to land with some power and use down elevator even during the flare.

Hey Guys..................Just got back from the field & put seven full flights on my virgin Twist 60. As I stated earlier, I moved the CG to 5 1/4" & all I can say is WOW! It flew like a dream with no bad tendencies! Take off is about 15 feet & it will go straight up & out of sight if you want too! It's a keeper.

Twist 60 ARF
Evolution 100 for power
14-4 APC prop
Spectrum DX7 2.4 Gig for radio
3 1/2" H9 wheels

Did you try any 3D stuff with it? I have one ordered myself; it should be here in a couple of days. Have you flown a Twist .40? If so, how does the .60 compare?

Hi.............I don't do a lot of 3D, more sport flying than anything else. Last night I could hold a hover at about 1/2 throttle for about 8-10 seconds before falling off. Let me admit that it is me & not the plane. If you are in to 3D, this bird should be a no brainer. It also will land at a snails pace if you want it to. The last few flights last night were a series of touch & go's with touching down the tail wheel with the mains about six inches above the grass.

Yes, I have the Twist 40 with a OS 50 SX. It is a great plane, but I think that the sixty size is a better plane for 3D.

One word of caution.......There is a weak spot at the bulkhead where the wing dowels go in. I would beef up this area with epoxy & pine square material unless you land perfect every time. (Ya right) Also I beefed up the inside of the landing gear area....Inside the fuse where the blind T-Nuts are located.

There are a lot of comments on just where to set the CG. I like mine just where it is. (5 1/4) Please note that I squeezed a 17 oz tank up front! At full fuel, it will still hover. Maybe not as good as CG moved further back................You will just have to do your own thing

With my both my Twist 60 and Twist 150 I put my CG at the front of the range suggested in the manual... I figured that would give more stability and less 3D capability, which is what I need right now. Both fly great!
