Engine trouble OS18TM???
Guys, I'm new to this site, but have been lurking on here for a while. I bought my Revo 3.3 about three months ago, and it took me about 12 tanks to kill 2 TRX 3.3 engines. (LHS "broke" it in for me!!)
Since then I have been running the OS 18TM engine, and what a pleasure. Goes like a bomb and very easy to tune, even for a novice like myself. But I took the engine apart tonight because it ran hot over the weekend. I reached about 320F and switched off immediately. I have attached pics of the engine, but I want to know the following: Did the overheating do this damage, or was there someting running around in the engine that could eat the piston like this? It was early morning, but the temp outside was about 105F with very high humidity.
Thanks
Gus

hhmm, never seen anything like that before... does the engine still work? look like as if sand granules got into the engine to do something like... but if that were the case, i think it would have busted your engine... i have 2 tm's and they run strong, never had this problem... what are you using fuel wise?

RE: Engine trouble OS18TM???
Sand is a definite possibility. Engine was running great week in and week out, but all of a sudden last weekend it started to run hot. The sleeve doesn't have a mark on ot, and looks brand new.
I am using ModelTechnic 25% dynaglo with 10% oil, but have now switched to Byrons 20% RTR.
Oh, BTW, The engine still runs. A little on the hot side, but still very strong. I was thinking of trying to remove some of the roughness with 1000 grit wet sanding paper to see if that wil help. Any thoughts?

run it a lil' richer and open as many holes as possible on the body to allow air flow! tempeture wise, do not allow it to go over 260 degrees and you should be fine. also, since you are using a lower percentage of nitro now, did you happen to do the break in process again? it is highly recommended.... good luck!

RE: Engine trouble OS18TM???
Well I opened the engine up, took it apart this afternoon, and will try to run it tomorrow to see if it is fine or not. I lightly sanded some of the roughness off the piston and head, so I hope I didn't kill it. Will know more tomorrow.
Ran my spare OS in yesterday, and for the first time ever I could get my truck to wheely. 180 turn, on the power and up on two wheels. Only got it to do it once, but now I know it is possible!! Love this engine!!

RE: Engine trouble OS18TM???
Hobby Shop was kind enough to do the first run in when I bought the car. They just let it idle for 10 tanks and said "All done!!" Being a complete noob, I took it bashing and it lasted about 4 tanks before I blew the con rod.
Took it back and for a cool $200.00 US they changed the piston, sleeve, and con rod. Me being a noob, I let them run it in again. This one lasted about 8 tanks and threw the rod out. Took it back and enquired about the run in method they used. I was informed they let the repaired engine idle for 15 tanks, and it is impossible that it broke again.
Suffice to say, I bought the OS online, ran it in myself and I've put 2.5 gallons on this one with no blow up. My dad got a Revo as well, and we just replaced his engine with another 3.3 after 4 gallons. Cracked the header and popped the engine.
And so the learning curve continues....

men, that's bad luck.... your hobby shop should have known better as to just let the engine idle for 10 tanks for the break in process. don't they know the taxxas break in process or the heat cycle break in(best one to use).. from now on, don't let them touch your trucks and make sure you ask for advice on this forum first before going back to them... some pretty knowledgeable individuals around here.
