I CAN'T Figure out what is wrong with my T-Maxx!??
My T Maxx 2.5 continues to shut off when hot, once I get near 200 degrees it wants to shut off and when it does it refuses to start unless it's cooled down. I've spent a lot of cash and tried different things like changing glow plugs, changing glow plug wire, adding a fuel filter, and recently I went back after run oil. I did notice yesterday after I put some drops of after run oil in the motor it started right up, for a little while at least. I've been using WD40 and I assume that is hurting my motor more than helping.
I've even set the high speed needle to 4 and a half turns out after resetting it. I went another half turn to lean it though because it was running too rich at 4 and half turns out.
I'm not sure what else to try? I'm thinking it's time to call Traxxas for the replacement engine. The only thng is that I've had this truck since March and I find it hard to beleive that the motor is done already.
HELP!!!!

take out the fuel filter it could be getting blocked up
have you tried a 2.5r head its bigger
i know this fix may hide the syptoms but hey its only a 2.5 engine
also you may have a air leak try richening it up more to compensate

Well of coursem I would hope I wouldn't have the same problem...and I would get the 3.3 if i changed trucks al together. I honestly would like to get this one fix if I could. Or, upgrade to 3.3 on this truck.

Yo Jarret did u change ur name from Xfactor?? lol sorry cause you guys have like the same sig
And it would be so much better to get the Revo but sell the 3.3 and buy an .18Tm or Picco .26 I'm thinking of selling mine, just too much stuff going wrong[&o]

You could always buy a Savage X, I'm not just saying that because I wanna cause trouble, but they are honestly great MTs, I'm not very experienced, but my engine is running like a dream, and it's just the stock F4.1

I think you should check for air leaks... fuel tank.. fuel line... backplate, etc. Then... take the head off and check the p/s to see if there is any scoring and if it is pinched correctly. I think this issue is an issue that can be easily fixed and can be an issue with even a new truck... and if you don't know how to fix it, it may prove to be disheartening with a new truck. I do agree that the Revo is a better platform built using better technology, however I think that the issue you're having is something that may be caused by something you're doing and it would happen to even a new truck.

I use WD-40 for after-run. I've been told that works just as good as the expensive traxxas after-run oil. Does anybody know otherwise?

Are you using a temp gun or an on-board guage? Maybe your getting a false reading. Sounds like you're overheating. Do you have a tuned pipe. When I put my THS Racing pipe on my 2.5 I had to richen the motor up a whole turn and then some. Tuned pipes lean engines up quite a bit so the factory settings run way to hot! Also what about the idle is that set to low?

Ok wait. this is news to me. sorry for the pun her my maxx has a corbom fiber hpi pie on huge difference. i still havent set my motor. i run slightly rich an do not set my motor. from the beginning. logic has proven to me. keep adjusting from begining keep adjusting for life. now for fun if i get challenged, go little leaner. then go back to prev setting and run atleast 2 tanks before stopping for the day on richer setting. temp w body on 92 deg this is in a hot area, dry hum. thats below 200f. richer helps. glow plugs only two sofar.

So, that being said. What motor do I get...I've been hearing a lot about the .26 Picco and .18 OS motors. Which is best performace and a engine I can use a lot of the same parts I have now with? I'm looking for a quick change and to be honest...I'm concidering a 3.3, but I hear the 3.3 also have issues as well.
I want a motor that will be an easy tune and reliable.....and fast! Drive it like you stole it style!
What are you guys replacing these junk 2.5s' with?

Thanks for the info. Although, when I spoke with the Traxxas tech guy he said I should be running at 220-280 at all ltimes and that is when the engine performs best. That running at cooler temps actually hurts the motor. I was told prior that 270 was max and to shut of if it exceeded that. Before I have hit 270 plenty as well as 300+ temps and shut it off thinking I messed it up...maybe I did...don't know.
But the tech guy says that all the details I gave him show that I will need a rebuild, expecially when I mentioned I added after run and it started right up before it died again. I'm not getting the proper compression which means I'm a replacement candidate.

That is messed up, the dvd and the manual tell you to shut down and richen it up at 270. Mine run's between 250 and 270 before it cleans up, I guess what the tech told you would explain why I thought mine was running so hot!

Even the guy who sold me the pipe told me to do this, and he races cars and boats. He's been in the hobby for like 30 sum years he's got like 16 cars and trucks, 30 sum nitro and brushless boats, several planes and a few helli's. And he owns a hobby shop! I thought he might know what he was talking about. I know if I wouldn't have done this I would have melted the head off my motor! And my truck whent from doing occasional wheelies when I was trying, to doing them effortlessly on accident! But, maybe it is just this wicked THS pipe that leans motors out?

Happened to me too man, I called Traxxas after my bro's engine just stopped turning over and I took it apart to find metal pieces, they were the clips from under the piston. This was 15 or so tanks after break in (Traxxas method for my bro unfortunately) and I called and some guy just told me the engine was over-revved and thats why the clips came loose. BS, my bro went easy on the truck, we never got to bash it or race it, just medium yard driving, so much for Traxxas support. Anyway, I put my old 7+gallon piston/sleeve set in his 2.5R block[&:] Dino, I say go .18TM since it drops in and its really reliable, TRX is very similar to the 2.5 except in that engine the con rods snap and its also a pain...[&o]

Thanks for the info. OK, i am a sucker for a deal and I apparently like self abuse because I saw a 2.5 TRX motor on Ebay with a gallon through it for $15.00 +$15.00 ship, I couldn't resist and purchased it for $31.00 out the door. It comes with pull start and carb, so I figured if the motor is junk (which I assume is) I may be able to use some parts and either way. I can sell the pull start and carb to get my money back. I will give this 2.5 one more try and then from what I keep hearing...I will purchase the 0S .18tm engine.
And just so everyone knows this, Traxxas said list on the 3.3 new engine is $260 and I would only have to pay $145 out the door with my motor as an exchange. Well, I continue to find the 3.3 online everywhere for $149, $135 on Ebay new. Good to know if anyone wants to negotiate with a Traxxas rep. and or keep there motor and sell it as is to get some money back.
