Default The Australian bbq and beers

This is part 2 of [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_4363309/tm.htm]The Australian thread part 1[/link] Part 1 got to 200 pages,so in the interests of being able to find stuff...the regulars have asked me to start part 2.
I have called it The Australian bbq and beers because that is what it is like in an online form.Everyone is very friendly and helpful, with the maiden flights, new purchases and unfortunately, crashes, celebrated and commiserated by all.
We have keen young guys starting out,g'day there MC and dabvid,we have older fellas such as Digital and Machette, and we have the great unwashed inbetween with DB,myself,Oz,Clovus, and "plane a week Crawf".Plus many more.
Ozrcboy also has a great website with heaps of tips for electric flight [link=http://www.oz********.com/]here[/link].
So come on in and pull up a chair and grab a brew and introduce yourself.
To start the ball rolling,I'll begin.
I am 39 and have been into rc for about 3 years or so now. When I was a lad I flew control line planes with my dad down the local oval, but for some reason the bug bit a few years ago,and I started trying to fly RC.
I began with el cheapo ebay powered gliders, and persisted through the crashes to the stage now where I can land as many times as I take off....most of the time.I learned by myself, but if I was to do it again,I would try to get some help from a club or similar...it was lucky that I had disposable income at the time!During this period, the forums were a great help, and if we can help others,it will be a great thing.
At the moment I am mainly flying aerobatic type planes such as the Formosa 1 and 2,the MPXT,the Hotpoint EP,and yet to maiden are a Brio 10 and a MUS.I have also had a bit of an affair with Deltas such as the Stryker and Funjet,as well as dabbled with warbirds such as the Corsair and Spitty. One of my favourite planes for just cruising is the Easystar, excellent for aerial video as well.
Regulars, please introduce yourself as you grab a coldy and stand around the barby!
Cheers,
Bleary.

<sound of tinny cracking>Hi all - I'm Ozrcboy - I live in Canberra (heh - don't get mad at me - you *elected* them), I'm 32 years old and I came to RC flying last year after a few pretty awful life events left me needing to find something to enjoy and sink my teeth into. RC flyign is brilliant - there is always a new challenge, and if you master one particular aspect (not that I have yet) you can always move onto another thing.

My handle - ozrcboy - was choosen to reflect the fact that I looked at (and still look at) RC flying with the passion and enthusiam of a youngster.

Thanks to all my mates on the Australian Thread for making it such a terrific place to hang out.

That's probably enough self congratulatory rubbish from me - my full hangar is [link=http://www.oz********.com/2007/01/hangar.html]here[/link]. Just a quick rundown on what is actually ready for action at this moment.

MPXT - this plane is serious fun but it does need a big motor.
Elebee - the one - the only "Killerbee" - striking fear into the hearts of stock stryker pilots everywhere.
Tucano - Just when you think you have her figured out this little red vixen reminds you that she will not be tamed.
Tigermoth - More hot glue now than foam, twisted and evil <pick the quote>

Not far away from action:

Mini Dragonfly - there once was a heli called dragonfly, that when in the air would crucify, any dolt of a pilot, who couldn't really flyit, and go in by the boom to make you cry
RV4 - come back here - I'll nibble your kneecaps <yes she will fly again>
Zero - she's been a divine wind in my collection and she refuses to say die.

Cheers and beers mates.

oz.

Hello all

Allow myself to introduce ... er mysef

<sound of tinny cracking> - sip.... aahhhhh....

Handle is Crawf 'cause that's the first part of my last name and I've been called Crawf since I was a lad... which incidentally was a long long time ago...

In my 50th year - actually the big Five-Oh is coming up in October....2 daughters - both grown up, one married... wife works... I am as of today, unemployed but my profession is IT.

Also had a life changing event early last year when I amazed myself by having a heart attack and soon followed it up in swift order with a quad bypass.

Forced me to re-evaluate life and what is important and to "sieze the day". Health wise, all is good now!

Around Christmas last year I got into indoor helicopters and that evolved into planes with the Electrafun in January.

Since then it hasn't exactly been a plane a week but I have had a few...

Current flyable fleet is:

Mini Ultra Stick
Easystar
Mini Pulse XT
Easy Glider Electric

Look forward to this new chapter of the thread....

Who's shout is it?

Just jump in with a quick question Crawf on your 480 mount on the MUS.When you say that you got out the dremel to carve a spot for the blind nuts in the firewall, what do you mean? I was going to do a typical Bleary and hammer them into the ply so that the spikes went in...I have never put them in before and wonder if this is too rough? I think I had better use the X mount as you did for added support.

That'd be me,

Same all round fella's?

Everyone calls me Clovus from some line in a movie that I never saw, but what the... Anyway, I'm a hearing specialist (yep, you probably need disposable income when the RC addiction bites) doing my regional 'tour of duty'. I got into RC 3 years ago out of boredom, but was something I always thougth was cool.

I've churned and burned my way though an embarrasing amount of planes in my quest for the perfect park flier. I lost count at 20 of so. I finally realised you could glue 'em together again which slowed the carnage. Self taught probably helps explain that as well. I think I'm pretty close to the perfect 3 plane combo for me, 1 plane just can't do everything I want.

Currently awaiting orders:
MPXT , 480 eflite BL motor- almost the perfect park flier, just a bit more speed and control surfaces and it'd be there
Model Engines Extrafun ... damn near indestructible, chuck around flier. Crazy on BL stryker motor
EXTRA300 SHP - fantastic, 47.25"WS helps, a dream to fly

The others.... (not bad fliers either, just not such a rounded package)
CAP232 ,480 eflite BL motor - given to me by a mate, not bad 3d fun
GWS TM400 - stock with 3s lipo - low'n'slow
Red Arrows DF hawk - waiting to maiden with 4s for hopeful performance boost
Tres Wright Bullet - DF nanojet - 60mph in a 18"WS......a real handful.....

Awaiting construction...
UF BAE Hawk bumped down the list when the DF hawk came along

Ok will give that a go.You guys made me so paranoid about loctite after hearing Oz's MPXT story,I went out and bought a heap of the stuff.Thing is I just gotta work out what I need to undo again! Memo to self,"do not loctite on the lid on the jar of Nescafe"
(Bleary grabs a beer from Clovus and scuttles away to the batcave to sort out the MUS firewall)

In the same vein as "there's always time for lubricant" (sorry - feeling like quoting movies today) "there's always time for locktite".

Doubt bleary would make that sort of blunder though - 3 years - old hand at this sort of stuff.

Bleary,

Glad you decided to use the x-mount... my LHS said just bolt to motor to the ply firewall but I thought that was a bit dodgy.

All I meant re the dremel was that the firewall is initially epoxied to a recessed frame in the nose. I found that the blind nuts were binding on that recessed frame when I was screwing the bolt in through the x-mount. By removing a bit of the recessed frame adjacent to where the blind nuts will be spiked in, it made for a more secure fit....

I was looking to take a photo but I remembered I totally rebuilt the front of the MUS and it would look nothing like yours...

If there is two ways of doing things and one is correct, guess which one I will choose? Thanks Crawf,I thought that the X mount would add a bit of support....and I worked out about the Dremel bit on the blind nuts.....after I had coated it with 5 min epoxy..[&o] Repeat 5 times Bleary....dry fit before glueing...grrr.Fits well, though I think I better epoxy on the other side when it drys, there is a small gap now.[]
Was too busy thinking about Loctite and which mounts I hadn't done...
Welcome Rowdy!

Hey guys, well Mezd is pretty much a combination of my first and last names.

I am 32 ( which means i grew up in the TOPGUN era -[8D] )but learned to fly when i was about 10 on by dads glow plane and my grandfathers gliders. Now when i said learned to 'fly' thats it, i dont remember ever taking off or landing!!!
However we stopped flying a short time after that because of all the sound restrictions etc they imposed on the planes and where you could fly them!!

About 4 years ago i noticed somewhere that they were starting to make electric planes that were quite affordable and started talking to my mates about them.

About 12 months ago i screwed up my back, couldnt work for about 6 months and ended up having surgery.
To help with the boredom my dad brought up a small wing under balsa plane that i started building when we used to fly. On seeing it again i thought, that looks like a P51 and started re working and finishing it off.... which sparked my interest again.

I then found PARKZONE and talked one of my mates into buying the P51 which was the only one out at the time, then went to buy mine.... the same day the FW190 came into stock - brought that instead!! I actually brought a second hand Aerobird Extreme to wet my feet again aswell.

I also thought helicopters looked interesting and i was bored so I "borrowed" a spare ZAP400 electric heli my dad had just brough for parts..... I have managed to hover it once!!!
So last week i lashed out and brought a Twister Bell 47 Medevac so i can practice some more at home!!

And thats me and my currant planes - although i can pretty much tell you that there will be a Stryker or a Spitfire in the Hangar within the next few weeks!!

Funny you should mention Top Gun... I remember the year it was released. I was living in Adelaide and driving to work or whatever and SA-FM had a competition to ring in and win 2 tickets to the opening screening. At this stage I hadn't heard anything about the movie...

I won 2 tickets and later mentioned it to my wife and she said something like "That's nice dear!" as they do... and she asked if we were going and I said (in all seriousness)

wait for it....

"Nah.... I can't be bothered going to see a western"

It became one of my favourite films of all time but well.. I just happened to miss the opening night [:@]

As well as the planes I have in the hangar- there are also 2 helis (I did have 3 but gave the Blade CX2 to my brother)

A Thunder Tiger Mini Titan E325 missing all servos, esc, motor, rx, and has a damaged tail gear assembly and flies like a dog

and

An Align T-Rex 450S which is also missing the electrics but is otherwise airworthy... and I am sorely tempted to get her back in the air again...

This is great, nicely done Bleary! Great to have part two Running.

Ok Ok, I am called by the name Maiden Crash, because..well, pretty obvious? Im 14 years old and just about to turn 15. I have a single plane, but still need to save for parts, it is my pride and joy. In reply to Oz's question in the last thread, [link=http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=405593]HERE[/link] is a link to the plane, its a review on the 'other' thread:

Ahh well I decided Ill use another E-sky servo for the rudder. I cut off the wire from the stryker servo to use as an extension, and I am just about toi solder it together. Only thing that is bothering me is the servo has a little give when I wriggle it. I will move abou 1.2 a millimeter to each side when I wriggle it, this will amplify once I connect it to the rudder. Can anyone shed me their experiences with E-sky servos?

Hi guys,

I guess it's my turn now to introduce myself ............... Spent all my working life in IT (why are there so many of us ? ) and the username is because I became a digital imaging specialist and consultant, working with state and federal departments, this was after working as a systems specialist on 'super minis' etc etc boring stuff. I'm now retired at 61 (yes I am that old ! [&o] ) and I look after my partner who has MS. My father got me interested in flying, mainly by building what was, to me then, a huge rc model of an old Cessna. This was in the days of diesel motors and 2 channel radio etc. Went through the Biggles / Airfix thing and kept the interest. Few years ago bought a Graupner glider and crashed that but enjoyed building it. Only recently really have I got back into it all, seriously, as I now have time to mainly, and started off with an Electrafun, which, whilst it was frustrating, did get me hooked. Met Crawf and have been firm friends since - I now look to him for encouragement and tips !

Presently have a few planes :-

Electrafun XP ........... looks real from a distance but now ratted for bits
Easystar (ex Crawf) - goes well but has stock 400 motor
MiniMag with Himark brushless - like that one a lot

"On the boil" so to speak, a Multiplex Magister - more on that in another post [8D]

I have to say, this thread is now a highlight of my day and is very aptly named right now No tinnie for me though I'm afraid, as one Aussie in a bar once said to everyone around, "The Pommie's drinking orange juice !! "

I did build an Alleycat - would have been good if I'd not included deliberate mistakes - I still have a piece of it though, and the motor !!

I'm in the process of building a pusher jet F15 from plans off the Net.

That's about it for me I guess.

Multiplex Magister (long post)

Guys, as Machette has mentioned recently, he's getting a Magister. He didn't mention that he and I are both getting one. They won't be other than a long term project and I'll use my MiniMag in the meantime. Shopping around for parts has brought up some issues, as well as pricing variations. I'd like to ask everyones opinion on the prices I've had and see what the consensus is.
Firstly, I found out that Modelflight are no longer stocking / selling AXI motors, something another lhs confirmed.

The recommended bl motor that works well with the Magister is an AXI 2820/12 , however, not being able to get one, I asked about an equivalent. ********* in Sydney said I should get this motor HIBMC3526-830. They said it came as a package with a 45A esc and a 10x7 prop from Model Engines for $179 - this was a quote over the phone. Annoyingly, in an email later, this price went up to $199, with the reason given that the original price was 'a guess' !! At the same time, on the phone, I'd been given a price of $159 for a 3S 3600 lipo, and, yet again, later in an email, this was increased to $179 and the lipo had gone from 3S 3600 to a 3S 3200. I did get an email quote on servos, there had been a recommendation to use HS85's with one having metal gears for the rudder / nosewheel servo, or, at the least, 2 x HS81's and 1 x HS85. However, I was shocked by the price - HS85's were $85 and HS81's $37 each.

Having worked on the original prices, the increases prompted me to contact the lhs (*note for Crawf - Budget Hobbies - not Hobbycrap). The first thing they commented on was that the motor quoted was only 830Kv and not suitable. They suggested a Himark 3520/1100, at a price of $75 with a Conquest 45A esc @ $105 and pointed out that they'd recently sold a Magister 'with everything' and supplied that motor for it. As a lipo, they suggested a 3S 3300 for $120 and, for servos, they pointed out that the HS85MG was overkill for the Magister and that the HS81MG would be fine for the rudder, with normal HS81's for the airelons and elevator. Prices they quoted were $23 each for the HS81 and $34.95 for the HS81MG ........... a substantial saving on the other pricing.

As both Machette and I are buying from the same supplier, I haggled a price of $185 each for the Magisters and we had hoped to negotiate a deal with ********* but their keen pricing seems to end at the plane.

Machette and I would welcome comments, suggestions, motor options and possible better pricing if anyone would like to comment.

Thanks guys
