My TMax wont go into gear - Help!
Hi All,
I am the owner of a used TmAXX .15 pro, that me and my daughter have been thuroughly enjoying for a few weeks. I bought it used assuming I would be using it to also learn how to wrench on RC Cars. I am new to RC cars, but have been in RC (Helis and planes) for 15 years. I have replaed the main spur gear and the one way bearing for the car, and these were relativley easy repairs, but I am now staring at something I need some advise for. The truck will not engage into gear now. I noticed on the last few runs, that it appeared to be stuck in high gear as the acceleration was sluggish. While running today, the car stopped moving and the engine went into a high speed rev ( I stopped it immediatley, no dameage) - Anyway, I fooled around with the forward reverse shift, but to no avail. I would like some advise here as to what to try to work. I enjoy wrenching on RC stuff, so if this requires a tranny rebuild, I am ok with that as well. Here is what I tried and some symptoms
1) I first thought it might be the clutch, so I did observe it working as expected. The clutch was disengaged at iidle and startup and engaged and spun the pinion gear when I increased throttle
2) I noteiced the large spur gear also spinning propoerly with the pinion gear, and no missing or broken teeth ( I have stripped the teeth from more than a few heli main anf tail rotors, so I wath this very carfeully!)
3) I noticed the servo for forward/reverse shifting working as I expected, but I am not aware of how much throw the shifting rod is normally moving - It appeared to pull in and out of the tranny about 1/2 inch or so
4) I tried shiftingat very low idle and high idle thinking it might be a drivetrain load issue - no avial
My daughter and I both enjoy this truck and want to get it on the road again - so, to all you experts that have helped me before, any suggestions as to what to try?
thanks to all who respond!
Joe

RE: My TMax wont go into gear - Help!
Your reverse gear may have went out. If this goes it will not move forward or backward. You can replace the reverse gear if you like reverse or get a forward only conversion that makes the tranny much stronger adn makes the truck a little quicker because of the loss of the rotating mass of the reverse gear. Most guys go with the forward only conversion when they get into bigger motors because the reverse gear cant handle the extra power. The 15 should not break the gear but it may be worn.
