Default Venom Smart Temp/Fail Safe in Savage X?

Hi All

I have a Savage X 4.1, would a Venom Smart Temp/Fail Safe be a good investment? I don't have a temp gun, or a failsafe at the moment? Anyone here using/used the Venom Smart Temp/Fail Safe ?

Many Thanks

I don't have one. I've always prefered using two seperate units. A failsafe is usualy less than $20 and a seperate temp gun is $25 - $35 so the cost difference is not great. I like seperates for a couple of reasons. First, I've got seveal vehicles and with a seperate temp gun I can check them all and check them easily and it saves me money too. I also think that a handheld is generally more accurate than an on-board. That's just my opinion but I know that with a handheld I'm measuring the temp at the glow plug. If one part or the other of a combo unit fails then the whole thing has to be replaced. I have heard of quite a few of the Venom combo units failing too. Also I think that it would be dificult to install the combo unit so that it's quick and easy to see/read with the body on.
Anyway, that's why I would get seperate units. Hope it gives you something to think about.

I used to have the on board temp meter but later sold it due to inaccurate reading. Now I got the P1 temp gun for same reason as DaveG55. But definitely buy the fail safe unless you're using Spektrum which has built it fail safe

I heard many times (although I don't know if it is true) that the on-board temperature monitors are actually more accurate than the temp guns. Can anyone shed some light on this?

See, I've always head just the opposite, that they're less accurate. And that makes sense to me since the probe pretty much has to wrap around the head and, it would seem to me that that would let it cool from air blowing over it just as the head cools the engine. I know that I want the temp from the glow plug anyway, since common sense tells you that will be the hottest spot on the engine since it's at the center of the combustion.
But I cannot confirm that first hand since I do not own one, and don't intend to for the reasons in my first post.

yeah, my temp told me it would be 5-10 deg off because of its location. you cant get a more accurate read than the plug.

i have the venom fail safe. I had it left over from one of my on road cars. It was something like 46 dollars for it and i think it was worth it. I have it in my savage x ss and it works fine for it. The failsafe feature is nice. Of course i geuss i'll never know if the tempreture is accurate because i have no other means of comparing the readings.
