TMaxx vs Savage
If you had to choose between either of these with their biggest engine which 1 would you choose for mostly backyard bashing or a little racing? I'm trying to get back into nitro monster trucks but i'm getting conflicting opinoins on which one I should buy. I like to continually add upgrades and make it faster and stronger. Which ever one I buy will probably have to be used as I don't have $500 sitting around for either but i'm an ex mechanic and i've had an electric stadium truck before so i'm not new to either nitro or trucks. I'm just looking for an opinion at this point and maybe get some ideas as to what speed/power upgrades to add to either. TIA

RE: TMaxx vs Savage
After doing much research this is what I found. The Traxxas and Losi guys will both tell you that their trucks are faster, but the ones that have had all three or two of either brand will tell you the HPI is a tougher truck. There are tons of upgrades and hop ups for any of the above three so I just went with the toughest, which seems to be the HPI Savage. I got the Savage X and am very happy with it. I beat it up pretty bad the first few times out and it just laughed at me.

If those 2 were my ONLY choices I would probably lean towards the new Savage w/the 4.6 (that's what I had considered before I bought my revo). Why not a Revo...especially if you're considering doing some racing???

RE: TMaxx vs Savage
Geee, I've got a Savage, a T-Maxx, an LST and a Revo and I won't tell you that the HPI is stronger. Nor will I tell you that the Losi or the Traxxas stuff is stronger either. They are all about the same in my book as far as toughness goes. I've broken all 4 trucks and they've all broken badly at one time or another. I won't tell you that any particular truck is faster than another either. Why, because you're looking at used and chances are that you won't end up with a stock motor anyway and any one of them can be made stupid fast.
I will tell you that my favorite truck is the Revo mostly because it handles a lot better, even just bashing, than the others.

RE: TMaxx vs Savage
i agree with dave,i own a t-maxx,a revo and a savage,if your looking to do a little racing, the revo would be the least expensive to make handle like a champ, the savage and t-maxx are big heavy trucks that take quite a bit to make handle for the track,if your looking to bash and race try looking at a revo, they are tougher than they look

I disagree, honestly anyone that says that a Savage is only as tough as a Revo or T-maxx is kind of B.S.ing.... There is no comparision in durability, thats why the Savage kind of sucks on the truck. But drop in some FLM plates, good servos and a nice .28 setup and you can hang with the Revo's... My T-maxx is fast and nimble hits 45 easy with an .18 but breaks like nothing.. It is NOT heavy, in fact if weight is removed in the right areas its lighter than a Revo, although, I agree that the regular 8 shock suspension setup is a bit outdated and thats where the Revo dominates... LST is the best all around truck..... For your situation, I would definitely get a Savage, follow what I said and you will hang with the Traxxas stuff.... Good luck, Tom[8D]

yes toughness i will give to the savage, out of the maxx and the savage,as far as handling, savage again, but not quite as agile as the revo, now on the other hand i do have a .21 conversion t-maxx thats lowered a little, and the stance widened a bit,it corners way better than any of the trucks in question,i guess what i am getting at,its not so much the truck, but the person setting it up,and driving it.

i think u should buy a roller off of ebay or the rcu market. its perfect for what u want, and u can choose your own brand new engine. i would get the revo. its really easy to work on and i love mine. ive never driven a savage but ive seen one and it doesnt look as easy to work on...maybe someone who has one can tell u...but i just love my revo.

RE: TMaxx vs Savage
i've had a revo t-maxx and a savage. still have the revo. between the t-maxx and the savage i would say the savage is better in every aspect in my book. it is a bigger beefed up truck that is pretty tough. it handled better to. the t-maxx has a million upgrades you can do but with all them upgrades before you know it you got 1000 to 2000 into an older designed truck. i liked my savage alot i bought it for my gf but i hated keeping up with keeping 2 nitro trucks going so i sold it to a buddy who loves it and i bought my gf an e-savage which has been a very fun truck to drive, and very durable. i agree with jarett if you decide to get a used truck deffinately get a rolling chassis, thats what i did with my revo and i built it up the way i wanted to. you don't know how the person that had it before broke the engine in or how much fuel it has in it. just my .02 worth.

RE: TMaxx vs Savage
it all depends on what you like...if you like working on trucks that use the TVP design then go for a Savage...I had one and hated it....Tmaxx is faster and alot easier to work on.

RE: TMaxx vs Savage
what is "TVP" and what is the alternative? I'm into building trucks and working on them to make them faster, more powerful, and handle better. I'm very much into drag racing and i'm an ex mechanic so I know all about more power and better handling!!

RE: TMaxx vs Savage
Thats the problem for most people^^, TVP's are pretty easy to work on, but much more durable than the conentional pan chassis and are more resistant to warping and flexing IMO.

RE: TMaxx vs Savage
Take advice ONLY from someone that OWNS BOTH! Not someone who has just driven, or seen them both. You want an OWNER!
The only advice I can give you is, do not buy an older model. If you're going to buy HPI, get the Savage X. If you're going to buy Traxxas, go for the Revo 3.3

RE: TMaxx vs Savage
I do OWN both, here are pics to prove it And dont say the Savage doesnt go fast, mine topped out at 48mph at sundays dragrace (with only a two speed). But there was a custom TM523 powered Revo hitting 76mph[X(] If you want to dragrace though, I have to say that the T-maxx will be the winner. The Savage is eavy and theres no going around that so the most you can get out of a Savage is 60 and thats with serious mods..

RE: TMaxx vs Savage
I had a savage x and now have a 3.3 tmaxx. I like the savage but the local hobbie store carys more tmaxx parts. I like my 3.3 and have lots of hopups. I would go with a t-maxx over the savagex. The savage x has problems with the diffs and hpi took 3 weeks to send me replacements. I had just broke it in by the book when the diffs started to act up.. Good luck and hope this help. traxx has better customer service in my book..
