Everything I need to know, (but don't) about Nitro Cars
Hey everyone, Ive been searching your forums for hours now looking for a good introductory thread about what I need to run a Nitro Buggy. Ive seen bits and pieces of what they require to run but nothing that comes close to answering the 10,000 questions I have. I just bought a 51C06_XtremeBahaBlue 2-Speed 1/10 Scale Nitro buggy. Not sure if that even makes sence, but it was what they called it in my e-mail. Soooo, I also ordered the Starter Kit for Nitro R/C. I have a feeling however that I am missing somethings for my set up. I know this is a cheap buggy and nothing great, I mostly wanted soemthing to just help me get into the hobby and get better cars in the future. Oh also, I belive my buggy has a .18 engine if that makes any difference in the answers I might get.
Here is a list of things I know nothing about, but probably should know.
Fuel
-where do I get it?
-what type do I need?
Glow Plugs
-??????
-??????
-Glow what? I need some info on these guys and if my car even needs one. I belive my starter kit came with soemthing to do with glow plugs
Air Filter
-saw someone mention these, do I need one or does my buggy come with one?
After Oil
-saw this mentioned also
Batteries
-Do I need anyting special?
Well thats about all I know and don't know, so imagine all the stuff I REALLY don't know.
Can someone link me to a forums that might answer my questions incase I jsut didn't find it. OR can someone fill me in on this information and anything else that someone who has zero experience with Nitro cars would need to know for their first one.
P.S. I'm not looking for super long answers about anything, just a line or two about the basics of what I should know about these items and what I am missing to make my buggy run.
Thanks so much for all the help guys. Hopefully I just missed the Forum that answers all my questions, but if not, this may be a good time to sticky a thread about everything a begginer should know.

Its a redcat tornado with a different name/body. The engine is the vertex vx18. It has pretty good power, youll enjoy it. Just dont let it overheat, which brings me to an item every nitro enthusiast should have; a temp gun. The el cheapo one that works well is the duratrax flashpoint

They are key to keeping your engine running at an optimal temp....or you could just spit on the head and see how long it takes to boil off! I prefer the first option.

RE: Everything I need to know, (but don't) about Nitro Cars
hey dude, welcome
oookey, let me tell you what I needed to know when I went into this hobby..
Engines (can big a huge pain in the butt) :
All you need to know about them is here, from breaking in, to replacing parts and all in between of maintaining your engine, tuning, storing fuel, etc..
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_5517128/tm.htm
http://www.johnnycoolguy.com/JCGR/ma..._break-in.html
Fuel:
Doesnt make too much difference in terms of brand when bashing, but for serious fun I would suggest 30% nitro mix and not higher than 12% oil mix (try not to go above 12% oil)
Glow plugs:
Everything you need to know is here: http://www.osengines.com/accys/choosing-glowplugs.html
these are very important. To run your engine without trouble glow plugs must be checked often since this is the part that actually keeps your engine running. try to stay with the stock plugs and not go switching to some short, then long, then medium length plugs, since its going to affect your engines compression, ignition timing, etc..........
Batteries:
Try and not go with cheap batteries on this one, for longer run time, get some high capacity packs/batts.. for AAs I would not get below 2500mah, try to get some branded batts, like Energizer or something of that nature. good quality chargers are good to for prolonged runs as well.
Air filter:
Nothing special, keep it stock until you learn more. Generally the more there is of foam, the better.
After Run Oil:
Dont waist your time with fluding your engine with this crap after every run... If you are packing the engine away for more than 5 days, apply it through the carb throat and glow plug hole, rotate the engine's shaft a coupla'times and thats it...
Try to do as much homework as possible before starting and running your car. Many little things can go wrong that will be pricy to fix, when they can be avoided.
Keep your car clean and tidy, Read your cars manual, Ask questions.
Cheers, Dima
p.s. when you get the car shipped over, check if everything is well set up, if the engine's carb needle settings are as what they should be. if the gears are well meshed and everything else... they are horribly put together at the factory. My buddy went through 4 spur gears in order to figure that out
EDIT: aah nuts, 42u got there before me

I agree as WD-40 does not absorb moister like after run oil only but displaces it. If you check you will see there is only one manufacture that recommends using WD-40 as after run oil Traxxas and maybe the are just trying to sell more engines. All others I know of say do not use it.

WOW thx so much guys, this has been very helpful.
I got one more question though, the GLow Plug Igniter, how many time should I be able to use it to start the engine between each 10 hour charge?

depends on the battery capacity, you can unscrew the plug and check for that good old bring red coloured coil.. I would expect about 20-25 starts from a medium quality battery with medium rated capacity.
