12th Annual St Louis Fly-In - Pictures
Well guys the 12th Annual St Louis Fly-in was another Huge success with many Jet Pilots in attendance this year! There were 52 pilots total with 12 Jet pilots and 13 Jets on the flight line and three fun filled days of flying! We had several jet guys from out of state and beleive they will all return again soon! The weather was in the low 70s with mild winds and fair skies. We also had a great turnout of spectators as well. (this is the same field that we have the Annual Gateway Jet Rally each June). Some of us camped out on the field and had some great after hours socializing and there was great food provided by the Club during the days. Here are some pictures of our fun filled, fast flying, Kerosene burning weekend!

Pauli - Devi took loads of pics for you. Good to see you and Patti again. But first it was a just fabulous weekend and the best flying I have ever experienced. The 6 jet scramble or "turn and burn" was just about as exciting as it gets. I have to say I think my Rookie II is slightly faster than Pat's Bandit, and it left your Phoenix in my con-trail (just my unbiased opinion).
Here's some of the jets.

Alec, You know darn good and well that your ***** was in the back with Pauli !! I got NOS strapped to my Bandit and even Ben Burden aint got jack on me
The six jets taking off simultaneously and flying in formation side by side at 199MPH was one heck of a rush! Lets do it again at Spiderman!

Pat: You need to get a few more RPM in that Bandit. It looked a bit sluggish to me. Or perhaps you were just holding back a bit, cos it looked so new and pretty.
Here's some of Robert's 3D Eurosport.

I think Pauli has finally learned how to land his trainer [sm=bananahead.gif] We all had a GOOD smooth landing weekend! Almost too good to be true!

Here's some of Paul Appelbaum's new Visionair Vantage. The forward swept wing looks really cool in flight and he handled it just beautifully. This weekend was the maiden of this model (before the meet started) and according to Pat it barely needed any trim adjustments. A damn good looking model !

Pat:
We got some better pictures of your F4. Damn that thing looks good and you make it look easy landing on a 600' runway. The spectators just loved that puff of smoke as the parachute deployed. That is one fine-looking airplane buddy

Guys,
We fly every aircraft imaginable off this runway with no problems. Paul Blanchard has even flown his F-104 off our beautiful runway several times! If we can fly Phantoms and Flying missiles off this runway then anybody can fly off here!

A few pictures of my Rookie 2. I had some major ground handling problems with this model (almost wiped out a number of times at Kentucky jets). It would track fine at low speeds but pull uncontrollably in different directions at high speeds. It was driving me nuts. Discovered it was the cheap-ass main wheels I was using, with the brakes binding under lateral movements of the wheels. Replaced them with Violet wheels and brakes and the problem is SOLVED. It now tracks perfectly straight so I can enjoy the flying, instead of sweating over the landings. And it flies Goooooood with p120 power!

And to finish up for tonight - some of my original Rookie. Now I can fly this one a bit harder/lower/faster than I used to.
I want to point out that there were prop planes, including large scale 3D, helis, gyrocopters, and a huge variety of other models there. I'll post those pics tomorrow night. It was a really good weekend and a good way to warm up for Spiderman, which is just 9 days away now

Alec,
Did these brakes have a lining that pushed againest the inside of the wheel.

Paul Applebaum scratch built his Visionare Vantage out of molds he fabricated himself. It's a replica of a full scale company that he works for. I believe this is his second or third one he has built since the mid 1990s. Each one gets better and better! I got the honor of flying it and I must say that it is one of the truest flying birds I have flown with only 3 clicks of right aileron needed on the first flight. As the weekend continued he got a bit faster with each flight. At times my eyes played tricks on me and I thought that the wings were "bowing" during each high speed G turn he took but............ it was the appearance of the forward swept wing with the dihedral. It flys excellent on a P-120. The Vantage has a VERY distinct look in the air from many angles. Paul is back with us and we look forward to seeing him at Spiderman with his new Beauty!! I am sure he will win many awards in the future with this one!

Bob:
Yes, the brake was an O-ring that pushed outwards on the wheel along the line of the axle (in contrast to Violet's in which the O ring expand outwards at 90 degrees to the axle like a drum brake). I think that as the plane was getting up to speed, any lateral movement of the wheel would push the wheel onto the brake and cause the plane to turn to that side. It was incredibly unstable, and as the speed came up would track in any random direction except straight. It was an absolute nightmare both taking off and landing. With the new wheels, it's a totally different plane and tracks perfectly.
