What charger are you using? My MRC 960 makes a high pitched noise, also. The smell is probably normal. Most new electronics have that distinct smell... you'll know if it's a burning smell.
My first battery ran well the first time. My second one took about 3-4 charges to get up to the level of the other pack. Now they're both giving me about 25 minutes of run time. After a few more charges you should be good. For the first charge, the MRC 960 will false peak, as most peak chargers do on new batteries. Keep restarting it (I even set the delta peak all the way up... but don't do this all of the time) until the total charge time is about your battery's mah rating, divided by the current. So, for a 4200mah battery at .5A, it would be 4200/500, or about 8.4 hours of straight charge time.

Did you charge the battery at all first? Because they do not come with a charge - well maybe a small one but nowhere near full.
Did you read all the paperwork that came with the truck, battery and charger? Never mind, I bet I already know the answer to that.
Take a bit of friendly advice and read everything a couple of times and watch the video if it came with one. These are hobby grade vehicles, not plug and play toys like you get at WalMart. They require more from you than slapping a battery in and going. I know it's exciting to get a new RC and the first one can be overwhelming but, really, take the time to read everything. You'll get a lot more out of it - and be a lot less nervous and frustrated if you do.

It should not take 1hr for the battery to charge at 4 amps. A battery like that should only take about 20min to charge if using a quick charger. You can charge it till the battery just starts to feel warm then let cool. Then you can run it. Its best to use like a peak smart charger so you wont ever over charge the battery. Never charge battery right after use or when hot and always charge till it gets the slightest warm to the touch. The factory does not charge the battery to the fullest. They charge it enough to where it wont drain totally durring shipping and sitting on shelf.

Actually, it should take 1 hour and 15 minutes to charge, just like he said.
It's a 5000mah battery charging at 4A. That's 1 1/4 hour to charge from completely dead. If you want that battery to charge in 20 minutes (WHICH YOU DO NOT WANT) then he would have to charge it at like 12 - 13 amps.
The best compromise between speed and battery safety/longevity is to charge at 1C. Which for his battery would be 5A. He has chosen 4A which is an excellent choice.
