Default Tips on sealing a hinge line

I need to know the best way to seal a hinge line using Ultracote white on the top side of the wing (in full view). I have seen some excellent sealing jobs and then some that looked like a 5 year old did it. So, I need to know where to start (i.e., wing trailing edge or aileron leading edge), wing trailing edge is squared, aileron leading edge is at a 45 degree taper.

Thanks for any help,
Jim

Deflect the control surface all the way. Lay a pice of ultracote which is bigger than the hinge area. Place a metal ruler along the hinge line. Iron on the aileron first and then the wing (altough it really does not matter - I just find it easier). Then take a straight, sigle edge razor blade and trim the covering at the top of the contrl surface and the wing.

But why not do it on the bottom where it won't show?

Default Seal Hinge line

Thanks for the replys!

I have to seal the top side because this ARF came with a slightly warped aileron - the gap at the wing tip is wider than the rest of the of the aileron and looks bad.

Do it on the top so dirt won't get into the hinges. Also buy a roll of clear and you will not be able to see the seal.

Default Clear tape

I've been using Scotch brand Crystal Clear tape. It's a little thicker than standard scotch tape so it's durable. It's nearly invisible when you rub it in, and It seems to be fuel proof, at least up to 15%. Best of all it's cheap.

Default Sealing the hinge line

Fly4Fun2,

Thanks for your method of sealing the hinge line! I got brave and did it last night - it turned out to be very professional looking. It is actually hard to see unless you are looking for it. I'll post a picture when I finish putting some graphics on the underside of the wing.

Default RE: Sealing the hinge line

FYI:

This is 3M's "Blenderm" tape that holds very well even in the presence of fuel.

Default RE: Tips on sealing a hinge line

If using Ultracoat/Monokote/Etc, use clear- no need to play around trying to match colors, etc, etc.
