Default MOTOR & ESC LESSON#1

Yeh it's me. Okay educate me. I am noticing that ESC come in different amp sizes. So do motors. The one I happen to have coming complimentary to the kit is a brushless 3500kv with a fan (whatever that is suppose to mean). So how do we properly match al this up?

I also notice some motors have 3 sets of numbers describing it. What is all that?

Voltage regulators?

Ok, The esc rating is the max amperage that it can supply before meltdown. It must be higher than the max draw of the motor, closer to the burst amps the motor is rated to for extra safety. If your getting a no name, pad the figure some. If its a top brand (like CastleCreations) then the number published is correct.

Sounds like you have the HDX 3500kv with fan coming. Its an outrunner, with integrated fan on the top of the motor. Different than the Align inrunner fan setup, which is nicer.

As for the windings, guage figures, i've never really looked into those. Most are rated at KV now, which is a whole lot easier.

If someone know the formula for the 3 number set, speak up please, i would love to know.

Okay this is good, thanks. makes sense as if it were lower , the motor would kill it. How much higher? Now I just went to look at the motor thatmight be coming, it says 3500kv with a max rating of 28amps. this means I need an ESC with a rating higher than that? LIke a 30amp esc?

So we're better off with an "inny, than an outty" for cooling?

Yes, or a little higher.

If the specifications say that the motor draws max amps of 28, then a 30 is cutting it close. Look at 35's for that motor, then you'll be sure that the esc does not give up the ghost when your really pushing the motor (which of course is the worst possible time)

35 would do for a name brand or off-brand. Or even splurge for a CC35. then you could run a bigger heli with more motor in the future.

No, i just like the align design better.

It's been my experience that even high end ESC's don't like to be pushed to close to their limit. It's almost always better to buy more than what you need. I've seen enough (and know enough) people with crispy CC controllers to know this to be true.

The weight difference between a 40 versus a 60 or even 80 amp controller is negligible, if you think you'll come close, go higher and be on the safe side!

This is good.

Now I read here somewhere about the guy who installs an auto fuse between the two. Sounds like a good idea to me to save one from the other .

Yes, that is actually a popular mod for heli's that contain a 4&1 or even a 3&1. A 2.00 fuse can save a 30+ dollar piece of equipment.

Now for the "stupid question". What is a 3-1, 4-1? I have seen the term since i started this[sm=bananahead.gif]
I was waiting for somebody else to bring it up but no takers

Those are combined multi unit.

A 4&1 has:
1) RX
2) Mixer
3) ESC
4) Gyro

A 3&1 forgoes the RX. Like this:

There are also 2&1, which is a ESC and Mixer. LIke this:

So these look like they are apparently used for helis with separate motors for the tail and not a belt drive system?

Yes, the 3&1's, 4&1's and even 2&1's are mostly used for dual motor helis (whether motor driven tail or COAX). Not really a concern for belt/shaft drive.

If I did it, whatever it was maybe was to help somebody else out and was not out of malice and also maybe the fact it might have been worth cutting out. I'll do my best to overlook whatever it is you have to say from now on.
