Default What style controller do you use?

Hello. I'm new to RC and am wondering what style radio controller you use and what kind of work is required to change controllers?

Nothing is required but a few adjustments if the freq is matched to the old one.

I buy mostly all cheaper RTR's on AM 27 or 75 mhz so I use a pistol grip 2PL from Futaba. It's not the best radio, but I usually run alone, 1 model at a time so it works out perfect for me as I can leave all the rx and crystals alone .

I have a 27 mhz with all 10 models memories filled and a 75 mHz with all 10 memories filled.

If you want to upgrade then the RX will need changing too.

all my cars and trucks use a pistol style remote. as far as changing them, you would need a compatable remote and reciever w/ the right crystals

The receiver is the unit that the servos plug into on the car. You need a receiver that is compatible with whatever transmitter you want to use. Usually, when you buy a transmitter, it comes with a receiver - but not always.

I use stick type. Even when I raced my RRR I used stick type...I find it easier to corner precicely and I handle better the throtle "feedback" .

a servo is the mechanical device that makes your wheels turn when you turn the steering on the remote, the same with the throttle, or ingages reverse if you have that. all the servos plug into a reciever, that's what tells the servos what to do,from imput from remote

Most people in the States use a pistol grip controler for land based vehicles. And use stick type controlers for planes/helis. A pistol grip with the steering wheel seems more intuitive than a stick for controling direction. Also, since land vehicles usually only need 2 or 3 channels the complexity of stick controlers is not needed.
I understand that stick controlers are more popular in Europe.

I've tried pistol style...it's not bad and I find it easy too but for me it can't compete the stick when you race on track. If you're mostly used to pistol type, at the beginning you'll find it a bit hard to get used to it, but once you do then you'll see it's more precice and you can work better the throtle "feedback" moves. Just get a radio with short sticks so that your moves are faster. Well rubber tyres last longer...but nothing compares to foam's grip. I often used rubber semi slicks but only at wet or rainy racing conditions. One of the best sticks I've tried or owned for rc cars use are:

SANWA Super Exzess ( http://www.dsaw-hobbies.com/articlea...yle1lang0.html )
SANWA Gemini II ( http://www.dsaw-hobbies.com/articlea...yle1lang0.html )

(They are both 3-channel digital FM radios at 40Mhz)

I have the Gemini II. That's the radio I use for all my cars (each car has his own receiver and servos...the Gemini II stock servos are on my 18ss cause I used racing servos on the RRR and EVOLVA that I sold with them).

I also have a Hitec ranger II AM but that's an old one that I have just for backup or other applications.

i used the ranger 3 fm ,,,seemed perty precise,,,actually it felt a little more precise,,,LOL,,,im going to race it this weekend,,

it was weird at first ,,throttling up ,,i had to get used to the brake,,but when in the straights it was like FULL force forward --felt cool

I use a pistol. I doubt I will ever go to sticks because I've always hated them. And it seems like you have to stretch your thumb to go full throttle or your thumb may even get tired during long mains.

Pistol style for my cars and trucks, and a dual stick for the one plane I fly.

LOL...thumbs are ok...and handling more precise...I'm not as good at pistol as I am at stick but It doesn't mean that I hate them It's up to someone's style! Some say that stick is harder but faster (Collari for example...).

It may be better, but I've gotten used to pistol now.

I think you should follow what you've gotten used to...once you learn one type well enough there's no reason to jump into another. Keep the pistol style by all means!
