Last spring I was searching thru the net looking for a replacement bipe for my old Flair D-VII, and that's where I found [link=http://www.cdscaledesigns.com/English/New%20Opener.html]CD-Scaledesigns[/link][8D]

Searching thru this website I discovered the beautifull RAF SE-5a! Contact's were made with Chris (the owner/designer) and we arranged a deal.

This is the first (short)kit of the SE-5a from CD-Scaledesigns so I am verry glad Chris give me the chance to be the first builder of this kit. And today it arrived!

It will not be a fast build because I'am building a DH-2 in 1/6 scale and a Fokker D-VIII in 1/3.5 scale at the moment right now, but I'll will try to finish the project next summer. I'am planning this build as per plan and not as superscale as per Don's Sopwith Snipe build and Steve's SE-5a build. For me this SE-5a will be a relaxed summer evening flyer, scale but not the whole lot of F4c details.

Hi Mike,

the larger etched sheet, which is the one Teus got (well he's actually got two, one for his DH-2 project as well - so don't get confused by what is in the picture) is in our price list for 27,65 Euro which is, at the current exchange rate, about 37.00$ plus shipping. This sheet has enough parts for a biplane model with double bay wings or eight interplane struts. It's kind of a generic set which is part of all our biplane kits except our Fokker D.VIII which has its own much smaller fret with fewer parts.

Nice of you to ask, Allen. We've been waiting three months for a custom exhaust adapter. I'm quietly keeping my fingers crossed that we might get it next week. Otherwise we'll make something ourselves, because we really want to get it flying now - it's been too long now.

Hi Steve,

The SE-5a is designed in scale 1/6 which give a wingspan of 1.35mtr. (53inch) Suggested engine is OS-52 fourstroke. I am going to use the Saito 50 four stroke.

And today the postman delivered me the 4-3/8" Williams Brothers scale wheels[8D] Ordered stateside from Sig-mfg because it's here in the Netherlands verry difficult to get the Williams Brothers part's.

I can start the build[8D] Don't ask why it took so long[>:] I asked a good friend to make some work copy's for me, it took 6 weeks![>:]

Today I received the drawings back and finaly had the time to study these beautiful drawings before to make a start. And after that I started glueing together the plywood fuselage sides with the 6mm balsa doublers.

Today I started with the balsa longerons, the 6mm balsa squares I saw with a bandsaw from a 6mm shelf.

Just finished both fuselage sides. First I build the left side and then on top of it the right side. This guaranties that both fuselage sides are exactly symmetrical.

Yesterday I did a few minor modifications because I am using the Saito 50, which is slightly bigger than the OS-FS52 which is shown on the drawings.

I made a small square cutout in F2, deleted the 6mm engine bearer and made a new custom engine bearer intergrated in former F1 and F2 for strength. The only minor point is that I have to lower the engine trustline by approx. 3mm to fully enclose the engine.

I made some progress during the weekend [8D]

I setup the fuselage and added the first back stringers. And I am now trial fitting the front removeble hatch, fits perfect over the Saito, and the cockpit formers.

Although I build this model as a "sports" scale model for summer evening flying, I want to add some detail in it. The first attempt is the dashboard panel made from some picture's and the goal is to print it in photo quality and gleu on the dashboard.

I made some progress the last few days.

First I made the front hatch, which covers the engine compartment. And then I made the topdekking with the gunmounting. That was the most work. Next wil be the cockpit compartment dekking, first I have to figure it out what's the best way to do it.

Are you sure you want to add a photo detail dash and not a scratch built dash?

I think in many cases the "photo-dash" is really a fine idea. For example, unless you're going to go all out on the cockpit (and often that's not possible) then why go all out on the dash? The best reason to build all the details of the dash yourself, would just be the fun of doing that kind of modeling. Here's an example. I'm already planning on modeling a particular Albatros CI. The original aircraft has a Mauser rifle hanging next to the observers cockpit. Now, amazingly, I've already found and purchased (on eBay for the measlly sum of $5 + shipping) three 1/6 scale Mauser rifles (WWII vintage but virtually the same). I've even found another 1/6 version done in actual wood and metal. Either would look great hanging on the side of my Albatros CI model.

But part of me says: "where's the fun in that?" Wouldn't it be fun to try to make (with wood and dowels and bits of aluminum) my own Mauser -- as I'll be doing with the Madsen machine gun on the top wing? Now I'm not some kind of insane purist. Really, I'm not. After all, I am going to be using the WB parabellum kit. And WB wheels.

So do the dash if it seems like fun. Do the photo dash if THAT seems fun.

Don I agree that fun is the name of the game. I just like to encourage people to try new challenges. There's something to be said for trying things that you "think" are beyond your capabilities... only to find out they are not, smiles. Not that I'm saying that this is the case here.

I am consider making a more detail dash, but is it worth to do this? My goal is to make this model as a relaxed (scale) summer evening club flyer. A full cockpit is not possible due to the control wires running thru the cockpit area so a half body pilot will be the best. And the dash is almost covered by the top ply dekking so that it is hardly to see in this scale, that's what me made thinking is it worth to make a full scale dash?

But who knows, [sm=wink_smile.gif]
