Default reverse on revo 3.3: Necessary?

Hey, guys. I'm just curious as to whether or not the reverse on my revo is worth keeping as i hardly ever use the function. can i just tear the reverse stuff out and make the car lighter and have it just be a no reverse like my 4-tec

thanks
i'm new to this

yes you can just take out the opti drive and the servo for changing gears..... just make sure the rod that connects the shifting servo to th tranny cant get pulled in and out otherwise it can shift into reverse..... i had that happen to me and couldnt figure that out for a while! haha

I really dont see the point in this "opti drive" when it only dictates if you can shift into reverse or not. Iam getting rid of mine, there is a "forward only conversion kit" that you can buy from traxxas.

"Forward Only Conversion Kit
The forward only conversion kit makes Revo legal for racing where reverse is not allowed. It reduces the internal rotating mass in the transmission for quicker acceleration and provides a small, additional weight reduction by eliminating the OptiDrive module, and the micro servo and linkage. When the transmission is fitted with the forward only conversion kit, the weight of the transmission is reduced by either 61 grams (when using the aluminum output shaft) or 48 grams (when using the optional steel output shaft).
Part #5394X Forward only conversion kit (eliminates reverse)
Suggested retail price $12.50"

Its quite easy.

1. Umount the linkages and wires connected to the gearbox.
2. Turn the truck upside down, release the 4 screws holding the skid-plate bolted onto the gearbox.
3. Use a small insex screwdriver to release the screw that is in the axle front and rear of the gearbox. ( you might need to turn the axle for the little screwhole to appear. But its there i promise you).
4. You should now be able to carefully take the gearbox out of the truck.
5. There are about 8-10 bolts facing the front direction of the truck on the gearbox that needs to be relased.
6. Split the gearbox in half..

Hey wait a minute, I think instructions are included

The Optidrive also acts as a failsafe, so if you remove it do yourself a favor and get an after market failsafe, it will keep your truck from running away if you lose radio signal or if the truck batteries get too low. imo optidrive is junk, I smashed mine in my bench vice. lol

don't buy a failsafe they are a waste of cash.....install a strong throttle return spring or rig your carb with rubber bands to return it to closed if you lose signal...at least half the guys on here that have run a failsafe post a thread on here about how it ran away on them even with a failsafe.......shoulda had a TRS

i've had bad experiences of interference resulting in WOT runs over the huge ass burms at the BMX track, best best is both a failsafe and a throttle return spring.

Yeah, when I was driving on a dark night, the Opti-Drive would light up and make my body glow a cool blue color.

A TRS won't do a single thing if the RX thinks it's getting a signal (interference) and making the throttle servo go WOT. That's what a failsafe is for.
The only circumstances where a TRS is a help are where the throttle linkage pops off the carb and when the battery becomes dislodged/disconnected.
If people are having runaways with a failsafe installed then the likely cause is an improperly set-up failsafe.
Failsafes are not a waste, I've used them for years and they've saved more than one vehicle for me.
As ttoks said the best thing to do is use both a failsafe and a TRS.
