Default Sweetest Running Engine

The weather is too nasty to be outside. I have run out of propane for my shop heater, so it's too miserable to be out there fooling with planes and engines. So I was just sitting here thinking about which engine is my sweetest running glow engine. I am considering ease of starting, good power, reliable running (no dead sticks), little or no fooling with the needles at the field between flights, the engine I take to the field, flip once or twice, it starts, and I am confident that it will still be running when I land. It may or may not be my favorite, but it is my sweetest running. Below is a partial list of some engines that I own and where I would rate them on a scale of 1-10.

OS .60 FSR: 10
OS .70 Surpass: 9
K&B .65 Sportster: 6
CoMo .50: 8
Tower Hobbies .46: 9
K&B Sportster .45: 5
OS .46 SF: 7
Super Tigre .60 (Italian): 8
Magnum Pro .40: 3
HP .40: 8
OS .60 FP: Not totally broken in yet. If it ever stops trying to break my finger, I think it will run well.

What is the sweetest running engine you have?

Man, you gotta really be bored to do something like this.

Saito 2.70 twin. I like 'em so much I have four, all flying. Smoothest running, easiest starting, most trouble free engine out there. I've got a Saito 1.70 radial that's a close second. Can't beat the sound of a radial engine.

My 2 sweetest running engines are my my OS .55AX and my OS .70 Surpass. Both have started easily, broken in easily and start at the field in one flip or one tap of the starter. They just run-no hassle, no messing around, no stopping, they just run every time.

O.S. SF 25,40,46,61 - 10s
O.S. 120 Surpass II - 9.5 after you learn the trick to making it idle
O.S. 91 Surpass - 10
O.S. 26 Surpass - 9
O.S. 160FX - 11+
O.S. FP .10,15,25,40,60 - 10
O.S LA 40,46 - 7
T.T. GP 40 - 10
T.T 25 Pro - 9
T.T. 40Pro - 9.5
T.T 46 Pro- 10
T.T 61 Pro - 9
T.T 91 FS- 8.5

MDS 40- 7.5

Fox .15 - 10
Fox 40BB - 8
Fox 50Deluxe - 9

Saito 30,40,56,72,91,150,180 - 10s

YS 45, 61 two-strokes- 8.5
YS 63,120 four-strokes - 8.5

These are all engines that I have owned from new and flown regularly. Generally speaking, any O.S. or Thunder Tiger ball-bearing two-stroke without a remote needle valve is going to run well right out of the box. The O.S. FP series of bushing engines are still common on RCU and elsewhere and are dependable to a fault. Saitos are my favorite four-strokes, set 'em and fly 'em. YS engines give great power for their displacement, but require more of everything (cash, nitro, maintenance, setup) as is true with most high-performance engines. Fox motors need more attention during breakin, then last a long time. MDSs are a crapshoot, some run well, some don't.

I've been at this a lot of years - over 35 - and can remember some real junk motors. Testors/McCoy .35 that required parts after both flights (which were both dead-sticks, as well). When I started, the best sport motors on the market were the K&B .40 and Veco .61 - and the 61 was a BIG engine!

Many factors have made today's model engines so reliable. Advances in metalurgy, CNC machining, props and fuel have taken a lot of the tinkering out of sport motors. A good modern sport 46 pulls as well as the best 61s of the 1970s - and costs about the same!

It's rare to buy a name-brand engine today and have a problem getting good performance out of it. All the major players have developed user-friendly engines, produced them to very close tolerances, and kept the costs down relative to inflation. We have LOTS of sweet running engines to choose from. Between that, radios that work, and decent quality ARFs for less than you could build a kit for, you youngsters have it pretty easy! Man, I feel old - and I'm only 48!

I'll only mention one......

My old YS 1.20 AC......idles sooo low and smooth and pulls an 11lb Ultra sport 1000 outa sight..... I'll score it a 9.9 It doesn't get a ten only because of the routine maintenance required.

Saito 65 for me. Smoothest, reliable, easy start and tune. Not the most powerful though.
