Biggest coax heli available?
I currently have a cx2 but all posts suggest that a bigger helicopter is the only way to fly outside with any confidence. I was wondering what the biggest coaxial heli out there is since I feel more comfortable with this type?

No you need a bigger CP or fixed pitch helicopter to handle the wind. Coax helis do noy handle the wind well at all regardless of the size, we can recommend some of these if you wish let us know.

Actually the workhorses are coaxial in the real world. I know you are talking about rc stuff, but an investigation shows some really cool stuff in the full size world.
I've asked for a 400 size coaxial because the energy efficiency is WAY better than single rotor - far more lift at any given voltage. But we're stuck with what we are given.
Unless: [link=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKSlVhgoNME]Super Coaxial[/link]
Look at the home page for Charly 12. See the picture? He made that in his basement. Remote Control. 6 foot rotor. Coaxial. Collective Pitch. Each rotor has a flybar for stabilization.
And he has two of them. One is powered my a jet turbine engine. Is this guy on the money or what? Turns out, this is what he does for a living. Unmanned Ariel Vehicles (UAV's)

Ya beat me to it...! I was thinking the same... The coaxial would actually perform better in the wind providing of course a bigger size than the CX2 of course... Since you already posted the link, I'll add the other one. The "You-Tube" vid is amazing, as you can see the wind in the background hitting the trees at a good force.

If you look on his "You-Tube account" he has a whole slur of videos of these heli's in flight... Just look where it says view more videos from this user, and they will list all of them for you to view. Amazing stuff. Here is one at 2900 ft elevation in windy gusts http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ngwm2tqyl6g&feature=user

I have seen a RC turbine chinook on youtube. That was pretty big. I have no idea who the manufature is. There is some good sized glow chinooks on MRC. Just to throw some ideas out there.

RE: Biggest coax heli available?
So it's pretty obvious that Coaxial helis handle fine in the wind, it's just that no one makes a comercially available, non micro RC coaxial. It's not like FP or CP helis the size of the CX handle much better in the wind either. E-flite, we need a 400 size coaxial!! I bet it would help even more people get into the hobby due to a relatively low learning curve.

I think I'll e-mail e-flite and make that suggestion of a 400 series, and I bet if others do the same they just might come out with one.

RE: Biggest coax heli available?
I will email them to. Like I said earlier they can call it the CX4 and the CX6. Of course with their success with the Blade 400 it is unlikely they will release a 400 and 600 size Coaxial but we can ask.

Ok guys listen up, I was talking about RC helicopter not full scale ones. I do not think the topic creator was asking about real scale, or is looking to buy one.
It is a fact that single rotor CP helicopters handle the wind MUCH better than coax, CP helis can change their pitch in an instant to compensate for the wind while you have to wait for the delay on a coax helicopter.
Big green machine, a Blade CP will handle the wind better than a CX2, I have flown both, and of course this applies to RC helicopters ha ha.

So if you've flown both (I own both) you will have realized that they... Are not the same size/weight. the BCX is around a 200 sized heli (180 sized motors,350mm plastic rotor dia.) whereas the BCP is a 300 (370 sized motor, 525 mm wooden rotor dia. ) . If you want to compare the CX2 to a 200 sized CP heli, think venom Micro 3d/Walkera 52, both of which aren't great in the wind and have similiar rotor diameters and materials. ha ha.. [&:]
...Furthermore, you said that "Coax helis do noy handle the wind well at all regardless of the size." He was talking about a CX2, so what coaxial helis were you talking about that are bigger? Or did you mean even the smaller ones don't fly well in the wind?

RE: Biggest coax heli available?
Funny you mention that, I do own a Venom Micro helicopter, it is much smaller than the blade CX, I was referring to RC models only, when I am on this website that is what I tend to think about.
And to tell you the truth the Micro wins outdoors. I have it grounded right now due to a faulty 3 in 1, but I have flown both outside. The CX goes whatever direction the wind is blowing and due to its poor manuverability (relatively) and sometimes you cannot even get it back to you. The venom micro (I am talking about the palm sized heli, still smaller than the CX) fairs better in the wind I can control the pitch so I can keep its altitude rather steady along with grater cyclic control.
I guess I wasn't thinking straight when I said "regardless of size" but if you take 2 similarly sized helicopters (RC!) and one is CP and the other is coax in my experiences and many others the CP will handle the wind better.

I do agree that CP helicopter would still be more agile and faster, but that’s the trade off for more lift and stability.
Sorry if I talk like I know it to be true, it’s all just my theory.

For those of you interested in moving beyond an academic discussion, head on over to the multi-otor forums at RC Groups and read about Charly12's "EzyBaby". It handles the wind JUST FINE, as you will be able to see from the many embeded videos.
