That happened to me too, clutch shoes have nothing to do with it. It just has so much torque, but you probably didn't have the spur/pinion lines up properly. You want them to mesh the most you can so it still spin freely.

Does it have the slipper clutch? If so try tightening it up. If the gear mesh is not right it will eat up the spur gear. I run a .21 engine with a 2 speed on my nitro MT and have no problems at all with spur gears so check your gear mesh very carefully. Their should be a small amount of play in between the gears and the engine must be square with the spur gear. It does sound like it could be in the clutch, did you put the shoes on in the right direction? Sounds dumb but they can be put in wrong and the clutch wont work. Clutch shoes dont last that long, the more power the engine makes the worse they wear and aluminum shoes wear even quicker. All I could suggest is to pull the engine and inspect the clutch , also check out free movement of the drive train because if its binding it will cause the clutch to slip and burn it up. The brakes not relesing properly will cause big problems, as soon as the carb starts to open the brakes should be fully released.
