flush mount water pickup
1. im getting a tuned pipe for my 48" weedy boat and i need to put a water pickup in my hull ive seen martno1fan try it but it didnt seem to work (not sure if you've fixed it yet) , id like to try it but what angle should i run it at and what size brass tube do i need
2. would 4mm ID silicone fuel tube be ok to use to run the water to the pipe and header
3. what is that rubber looking stuff in the loop end of tuned pipe brackets, do i need to use special heat proof stuff for that or will just some foam weather strip stuff do the job
4. and also would these turn fins be good to use on it too

RE: flush mount water pickup
why dont you just run a rudder blade that has a pickup in it?
And yes, 4mm ID line is fine. 4mm converts to just over 1/8"...which is pleanty. 4mm ID silicon tubing is what i use.

RE: flush mount water pickup
Works a treat for me.
A couple of pictures below, the answer to the angle of the pipe question is get the pipe as shallow as you can. Once the boat is doing more than about 15 MPH there is heaps of water coming out. I've seen some flush ones that you can buy too, I think from MHZ.
Easy to make them though:
The port side one is the water pick up and the starboard is for clearing water out of the hull. Sorry the second in the hull shot is blurred, that was my old camera, but I'm sure you get the idea.

Twice in the same boat Mart. And once on each of the other of mine. With success.
And Jacob, I use 1/4" pipe, sorry, should have mentioned that. Although I used 5/16" for the other water outlet. (My bailer!)

RE: flush mount water pickup
You are welcome.
I must say, that looks really neat. I had a couple of goes to make the first one work well and it seems the critical thing to get good effect is to get the tube angle as shallow as is possible, if it's not shallow enough it does not work well until higher speeds.
Yours looks better than my first attempt, which worked, but was not as good as I wanted. I suspect you will find yours works well.
I do know of someone who mounted one and could not understand why it was not working until he realised that he had mounted a bit further forward and when the boat was going fast, that bit of hull was more out of the water than in!!
Oops.

RE: flush mount water pickup
ok thanks guys, by shallow angle do you mean having the tube at about a 20 degree angle to the hull or like 70 degrees, and no one has answered my question about the rubber stuff in the end of tuned pipe holders, would it be ok to just put some rubber from a bike tube there or some foam tape from a radio box lid

RE: flush mount water pickup
Certainly more like 20 than 70 degrees. Not sure about the rubber stuff, I don't mount my pipes like that.
Maybe some silicon tube could be used split then wrapped around. I should imagine if it is anything like my pipes that it is going to need to be heat proof. After a good run the silencers on my pipes will give a you a bad burn if you get too close to them.

RE: flush mount water pickup
the way you installed it should not be a probelm as long as they are in clean water. I do mine with some help from the "flyboys". I use thier large control rod exits and mount a fitting to the inside of it. I later dremel out the portion of the hull and grind back the lip. install it with marine tex white and "VIOLA". for about $1.50 you got one nice flush fitting. i had to put 4 of them in the boat. 2 for motors and 2 for pipes/exhaust flanges so i staggered them in the bottom of each spons. i attached some pictures of the fitting and the installed piece. give a nice clean finish.

Hi Jacob,
no photo's other than what you have seen I'm afraid Jacob. Generally, I drill a hole in the hull where I want the pick up, slightly smaller than the tube, then elongate the hole with the drill then to finish a round file.
Then simply fit the pipe into the hole, (it has a bend in it so it is around 100degrees) then I tape the pipe into position with some insulation tape or similar to hold it. At this point there is simply a bit of pipe sticking out of the bottom of the boat facing forward. And a corresponding vertical piece inside the boat. I then simply glass in the pipe on the inside using micro fibres and resin as appropriate for the hull, a layer of glass tape over the top to finish and that's it.
When set, I then take my dremel and cut the pipe off under the boat as close as I dare get with the dremel, then finish to flush with file and wet and dry. A little filler if required and a dead smooth pick up is achieved.
I think MHZ make some proprietry flush pick ups that look really easy to fit too, but these are working well for me.
I just checked on my blue Panther, and the water pick up under the hull for the pipe is approx 3/4" long finished, which gives some indication of how shallow the angle is on the pipe as it penetrates the hull.
I must just say here too that this is not my idea, I was advised to have a go by Patrik Tegelberg who some of you will know on here.
I like them, very low drag, and keep the boat lines tidy.

fuelman8 Its a piece of copper about 0.020" and I rolled it around a 1/4" tube and then punched two holes.

I'm guessing he meant your tee bar, Farside. Might be wrong though.
Top secret? Looks like one I have.

that T-bar appears to be the one from Zac @ americanrcboats.
Nieto... hope you plan to fill and smooth out that sponson where you have the pickup...

Is this type of water pick-up desirable? I only can imagine that everytime the boat gets airborn you'll have an interruption in waterflow. Am I right or wrong?

I guess you are right. Same goes for any type of pick up though, the interuption is such a short time it will not matter.
The flush pick ups produce marginally less drag, plus, they are not visible so there is an aesthetic benefit too.
