sealing tape
What alternative is there to sealing the radio box? There should be some kind of tape that will work other than paying 12 dollars for a roll tape.

RE: sealing tape
Can get hockey stick tape for like 3 bucks.
Me.. i spend the $10 for the tape from www.rcboatparts.com cause it seals good, and doesnt leave any residue when taking it off.

RE: sealing tape
I have used 3M electrical tape. Just be sure to pull it off after the days run cause I am sure it would leave a residue if left on too long.

I don't know if it's cold enought where you live to get what I've had good luck with, window sealing tape. Cheap and is really close to the old Prather tape. Home Depot, Menard's or some other home improvement store might carry it.
Some of it is wide but creased to go into the window and sill joint. I've slit it right along that crease, easy to do with an X-acto knife.

RE: sealing tape
Cheap & no mess. VERY water resistant.
Storm King clear Vinyl tape for sealing air conditioners gaps. Put it on in May , peel it off October . Never pulls away. No sticky mess. Comes in a roll up to 2" wide.

RE: sealing tape
Do none of you use screw down covers on the radio box?
Mine is fitted with a rubber seal on the top edge and the cover is screwed into place on to it.
Cheap and easy.

Not right now Glenn but I'm looking at one of Dr. Buck's radio boxes.

Hi Ron,
that's the kind of idea I use. Seems to work OK for me.

RE: sealing tape
The screw-down lids used to be about the only thing that boaters used way back when. Usually a bead of silicone sealer was laid down on the box then a piece of plastic film (Saran Wrap, etc.) and the lid put on until it cured. Rubber gaskets were also used among other tricks.
I still like the tape method though as it's easier to put on and take off. I have this thing where screws like to fall off and hide in the grass.

Thanks Ron. Now I feel even older. Quite right, I started with the bead of silicon trick and the screw down lid when I started messing with boats - 28 years ago. (That makes me feel old!)
Guess old habits die hard.

I like the idea of not having to use tape, but there hasn't been anything I've seen along the lines of "captured" type screws that would hold themselves to the lid. Tape seems to be a hassle, but so is a bizzillian little screws...
I've started thinking of using one Dzus-type fastener right in the middle of the lid, and a pull down wire installed in the box, but that might be in the way, or the fastener not very well sealed even when tight.
Wonder if anyone is using that method.

The secret to a PERFECT sealing gasket is the gasket. Sounds obvious ?
I have to buy pieces from www.MCMASTER.com They have every thickness and softness of CLOSED CELL foam.
