i have a question about stuff done in alot of vids
in alot of videos i see people jumping their rc's. its wierd though because when their rc's are in the air they tilt forward or back or side to side like the driver is making it do that. how is that done??

By braking or using the throttle. If you increase the throttle, the same amount of force that is being applied to the wheel to turn it forwards is being applied to the chassis in the opposite direction - basic torque physics. When you're on the ground and you punch the throttle, the entire car has a tendency to rotate upwards around about the axle that the wheel is on - thats why with enough torque a car can wheelie. In the air the same physics apply. Braking of course works the same way, when you apply a force between 2 objects they both feel the same force in opposite directions.
Using that principle, a good driver can adjust the orientation of the chassis relative to the ground in the air, resulting in a more controlled landing, or even doing flips.

Push the trigger back (away from you) to brake. ESCs have electronic brakes, where the motor becomes a dead load and slows down the drivetrain. I'm not sure whether your dad has the XL-5 version of the VXL, but concept is the same. The difference is how the electronic brake functions.
But either way you do have brakes, and the manual should explain how to adjust end points and such.

Hmm well looking at the XL-5 manual, it looks like it simply uses reverse braking. Which is fine - just be careful not to strip gears.

and you can turn the wheels in the opposite direction that you want to lean ex. turn left to lean the truck to the right in air
