Different Castor/Synthetic blends Comparison. Check it out!
Hey guys.
I'm gonna buy some extra oil and add it to the 15Nitro/14 Oil Airplane mix I'm gonna buy.
But, I'm looking at Klotz's R/C Oil products and I have a few choices:
Scale: 1-10
Remember Higher is better. Less smoke, less deposits and more protection.
Flash point: This is the temperature at which the oil breaks down.
Heres they are:
SuperTechniPlate (20% Castor)
Smoke:8
Deposit:7
Film Strength (Protection): 8
Flash point:460
My Comments: Good compromise with good protection!
Original Techniplate (Pure synthetic)
Smoke:10
Deposit:10
Film Strength (Protection): 5
Flash point:460
My Comments: Sacrificing protection for smoke and deposits.. bah!
BeNOL (Racing Castor DeGummed and Fortified)
Smoke:4-5
Deposit:3-5
Film Strength (Protection): 10 <- DAMN!!
Flash point:520
My Comments: VERY good protection at the cost of deposits. High flash point.
R50 Techniplate Racing Synthetic
Smoke:7-9
Deposit:7-9
Film Strength (Protection): 9.5 <- Amazing!
Flash point:400
My Comments: Looks like we got a winner here !! Slightly lower flash point.
check out www.klotzlube.com
Theres a LOT more information about these oils over there. Theyre about 12 bucks a quart.
Let me know what you think!

Well..
They require a minimum of a $25 Purchase.
Anyone here interested in buying a quart?!
I can buy 3 quarts. They charge 10 bucks for shipping.
I'll charge you $13 shipped to your door. That way you can split the shipping cost with me.
see what I'm talkin about? I dont wanna make a profit. Just splitting the shipping cost. I'll order it to my place, and then I'll pack it and send it to your place.

you going to start brewing your own cough syrup there Buggies? Are you doing this for fun, or to cut expense, or what? I've laways been fascinated by the idea of blending my own stuff, but I don't really even know where to start...

Well I'm gonna do a hybrid brew. Gonna buy airplane fuel and add some R50 oil to it. to bump the ratio up to like 14% Nitro and 20% oil.
I'm gonna try and get 15-20 gallons out of this rossi LOL
With this kinda blend, prolly can!
That baby has enough power at 40% throttle running rich to keep me happy!

nana, nice. I've never run any higher nitro oil than the 20/16 I run now. Is there a noticeable performance loss when running a mix that is pretty much the other way around? (like a 10/20)?

Of course I expect power to drop by about 10-15% tops.
But here are the advantages:
Cooler running engine..so you can lean it out more
Leaner setting means less fuel used and better mileage!!
Factor in the reason behind doing all this: Extended engine runtime.. about half the damage as with normal fuel..
And you got a definite winner!
Well.. looks good on paper so far. Hey Krusty, Homebrewer.. any expert comments? :P !!

What would be the difference between this blend and using Brak in fuel?
I'm a newb to fuel mixtures, but I just got a Sirio .18 and want it to last as long as possible.... if this fuel really is safer for it I would love to try it out.

the guys at the LHS said I shouldn't run the airplane fuels in my T-maxx. i never understood this. I figure I might lose a little performance, but otherwise it shouldn't hurt, and should help engine life because of the extra oil. Let me know what you find out with your expierments buggies.

Anyone know of a retailer in your area? Maybe you could buy a quart and maill it to me and I could paypal you?!
I dont really wanna spend 35 bucks for 3 quarts when it'll take me like 2 years to go through 1 lol.

hey buggies, I just looked at the spec sheet for the r50, I think it is gasoline only. It doesn't say that it blends with methanol.
Let me know what you find out, or mabye a call to klotz is in order. If you can blend it with methanol, I would be interested.

Just spoke with Klotz Rep
He said that you definitely do NOT want to use the R50 - it will not mix with the nitro r/c fuels - gasoline only.
I mentioned to him that I've been using the original Techniplate mixed with de-gummed Castor at 50/50 to raise my Trinity MHP 20% nitro to 18% oil content and he said that was exactly what he would recommend IF he were going to use Castor for added film strength. However, the Castor will leave carbon deposits over time. Not much, but after 10 gallons you will notice it.
He went on to say that Original Techniplate alone is more than enough (despite it's average film strength rating) to handle your application. Based on your earlier statements, he said you will experience extended engine life with very little loss of performance.
FYI.

so NitroMan,
you've been running airplane fuel in your car or truck engine without any trouble?
Performance ok?
Also, how long have you been doing this, can you comment on engine longevity?

ok, this is what I bought the last time I was at the hobby shop, but based on their recommendations, I didn't use it. I bought 20%nitro heli blend, 18% all synthetic, to this i added almost 4 oz. of castor, which should have brought the oil content up to 20%. Like I said I didn't use this, but after reading some of these posts, I wonder if i should give it a try.

Buggies.
If you are going to add anything to your fuel, use Benol (Klotz). It is castor oil. You can use any quality castor oil made for engine lubrication. I'm presently using MAXIMA degummed racing castor oil. You can usually find it at a motorcycle shop for less than $7.00 a pint. Understand that there are other brands that are just as good. Castor oil will blend with methanol. At present, I'm using S&W 20-20 YS blend. It contains 20% nitro and 20% synthetic oil. To the gallon, I add 2 oz. of castor oil. I like the additional castor as it protects from lean runs and provides a protective coating, against rust, to the engines internals that the synthetic doesn't do. I use this fuel in both my planes and cars. Remember guys, THIS IS NOT ROCKET SCIENCE (lol)!! Most people will upgrade to a different engine WAY before their present engine needs a rebuild (8 gallons?).

Hey buggies,
the R50 won't mix with the methanol glow fuels. It only mixes with Gasoline. So if your gonna mix some up, use Techniplate, Supertechniplate, or good ol' castor(Benol).

Arg..
I knew there was a catch!!
Thanks for pointing that out! I guess I'll have to go back then.
Also.. Can you tell me what the typical blen is for airplane fuel?
I know each fuel is different, but more often than not, whats the synthetic/Castor ratio?
And apparantly, car fuel has less castor correct?!
I would like to say that please consider this as a Q/A board. Dont want this to be a smorgesboard of fuel releated flame wars!
Again, thanks.. uh Pigman?!

The Wildcat premium fuel is 80% synthetic and 20% Castor. What I have been doing recently for my 2-stroke Airplane engines, is buying 18% all synthetic, and adding about 4 oz. castor which brings the total oil content up to a little over 20% oil. I add techniplate synthetic to the 30% nitro 18% all synthetic to bring the oil content up to about 20% all synthetic, and I run this in my 4-strokes (Saitos love the nitro). Like I said earler, I bought a gallon pf 20%nitro, 18% all synthetic that I added about 4 oz castor to, that I was going to try in my T-maxx, but I haven't tried it yet. Guys at LHS said it wouldn't work, I am doubting that is true. if I get a chance, I will try it tomorrow and let you know the results.

YEah they want to sell you the car fuel. They laughed at me when I went to pick up the airplane fuel a while back.
I didnt know enough to argue so I put it back (and got nothing..lol)
I'm gonna buy the Benol and techniplate separately and take it from there.
Check out this link for a coupla cool calculators for Adjusting a Premix and to create your own Premix.
http://www.geocities.com/aeronuts_rc/rclinksf.html
I'm gonna go ahead and buy 2 quarts of the techniplate and a quart of Benol to mix.
