Default How do I make a strong bond.

Here's the deal...

I need to create a strong bond between a piece of plywood and a piece of nylon.

The design of the piece means that I will constantly be trying to pull the two pieces apart. Unfortunately, this is not avoidable.

Basically this is a modified control horn (half the size of a 1/2a control horn) on the inside of a landing gear door. when the door is closed, the force will be pulling on the bond directly. I want there to be some force on this bond to positively close the door. Also, there will be considerable force when the gear closes the door.

I've tried epoxy, which failed after about 10 closings of the door. CA does not stick to nylon for any length of time.

Screws will not work, as the door is thin and the nylon piece is too small.

What other options do I have?

Mold up the door out of fiberglass cloth or CF, including the hinges and horn.

What is CF?

How would I mold up the horn and hinges?

CF=Carbon Fiber

Why not just add a layer of FG to the door which will encase the horn?

CF - carbon fiber

have you tried coming thru the door with the horn, this way the flange from the horn would become structural, by being a wider surface to pull on.

or if room allows, perhaps a lite ply cap slid pver the horn and epoxied into place making a much larger glue area.

Your going to have to do a mechanical type assembly. Nylons and polypros are impervious to chemicals along with alot others. Put the horn in the location you want, then reinforce around it. IE epoxies, resin, etc.

Why not make the horn out of plywood? If you glue it on properly it won't come off. A little chopped glass at the base of the joint won't hurt either.

Counter sink the horn in the hatch, epoxy it in and then sandwich the horn in with another piece of light ply.

This sounds like a job for PFM which is the hobby name for the glue. If you cannot find PFM, it's industrial twin is E6000 which is sold in craft stores such as Michael's.

rough it all up and make a fillet all around the base of the horn with balsa dust(i get my balsa dust off my belt sander) soak in thin cyano and stand back until the cyano smoke has cleared. after it has cooled down it should be very very strong.

by the way, balsa dust and thin cyano is good for fillets, especially wood to wood joints where extra strength is needed.
just watch that smoke, it is very nasty if you breathe it in(dont ask me how i know!)
