finished my easy vee off and drove it today.


I am having a huge problem with it rolling over when I hit the gas, enough to where I can probably sink it if I'm not careful.

hi first thing i see is that you havent sharpened and balanced the prop.

True I haven't yet, but it is balanced from WHH just not sharpened and polished.

that is probably the most of the problem.

Sharpen the prop also if its trying to really roll over id check youve got things low enough in the hull?.Also i dont see how a prop can claim to be balanced if its not been sharpened ?,balance and sharpen it propperly .

ps i notice in the pics your tabs look flush with the hull bottom if so they should be a tad up from the bottom.Nice boat though i like the green.

Look at other mono setups,along with folks that have posted pics of their easyvee..More important,go to Joe's site and look how his are mounted... .....You will see your turn fins are mounted WAY too low..

How deep should the turning fins be in the water?

the trim tabs are very low but not lower then the hull, I could raise them a tad but how will that help?

I'm not sure how they balanced it but didn't sharpen it, though on the center hub of the prop there was material removed? I'm not sure.

I have sharpened and a slight polish the prop so I'll see how that goes today.

the trim tabs should be mounted so they are sat a cpl of mm up from the bottom if you get what i mean ? your turn fins might be ok if you look at them from the back of the boat ,make sure they dont go low enough so they will drag in the water when the boats running styraight at speed,they should only be in the water in a turn .

I know what you mean about the trim tabs I'm fixing that and the turning fins I adjusted to not sit so low.

Do you have a thrust washer between the drive dog and the strut? Severe rolling is a sign of something binding, go through and make sure everything will turn freely under tension.

My Feedback: (1)

The first thing that I noticed off the bat was right in your first picture, the left trim tab. Yes, like the other said, it should be about 1/8' above the transom but the left one is also crooked.
A little trick that I just did on my gas mono was to make a "T-Square" out of a couple of scrap pieces of lite ply and tape it to the bottom The top of the "T" was made out of the thickness of how far the trim tabs needed to be. It was pretty idiotproof for me as there are times when I do need the help.

I concur with Mart here....Especially the last part of his statement ...

I've never run a setup like you have there....On a mono...Skegged strut with an inline rudder,as most run a stinger drive and offset rudder.

I was able to adjust the trim tabs but not much, I had to drill the holes bigger on the tabs so I could shift them around a little.

They are not an 8th of an inch up, but they are now 1/16th up and level, yes one was crooked.[:-] thanks

I was able to adjust the turning fins, they have a slotted hole as to side them up or down so I moved them up, but only a 1/4". So off the bottom of the boat the are 2 3/4" long, I think thats still to long!.

I had the boat out this morning with the prop sharpened and polished but not very good, It did help but not much. I was able to adjust the right trim tab to keep it level but when I would let off the gas the boat would roll to the other side.[]

I'll get some vid next time I go

When you say roill are you meaning as in a barrell roll or just veering right?if its the latter this is prop walk or torque roll or a mixture of the two.You can overcome it by shimming the strut to the left a tad so the props angled a cpl of degrees to the left which will help.Most guys overcome it by offsetting the drive when they install everything but if yours is dead centre this is a quick fix you could try.Heres a pic of my old woody with fins and tabs mine are pretty long but they dont go as low as the hub of the strut ,if yours are arround the same depth you should be ok.Out of interest when your boats sat in the water does she lean to one side? if so maybe add a little weight to the oposite side to level her up a tad put the weight level with the motor ,a wet towel for a test run would be a good idea to see how that effects things.By the way Mikes suggestion sounds good to me as i notice no gap between drive dog and strut asuming your flex is attached to the motor with a collet ? if its a square drive setup then it doesnt need the gap.You need a 1/4" gap if your using a collet setup as the flex shrinks as it tightens under load which will cause binding and eventually will snap your flex.

The boat is definitly barrel rolling, so that would be prop torque, and alot of it.

the strut is dead center and the boat is a tiny bit heavy on the side that goes down( right side from back) but only alittle, it doesn't even sit in the water uneven but this could be some of the problem.

for the binding, it is a square drive and I can spin the prop with my hand very easy.

My thoughts so far are:

The prop is still the main concern, with it not being sharp or balanced

The motor may be a tad high in the boat, I will get this lower and see how much that helps

The boat being alittle heavier on the side that rolls down, this can't be good so I wll get the weight to the other side, probably when I adjust the motor lower I hope.

after I get this done I will get back to the thread, may be a day or 2.

OK, I saw above where others told you about the turn fins being way too low but while you're messing with them make sure that they're square to the transom. It may be an illusion from the shots but they don't appear to be 90 degrees but tilted out a little.
I know that you're not too thrilled about drilling and filling more holes but while you are you can move the trim tabs further inboard also.

Looking at the pics i wouldnt say your motor is too high to be honest ,first thing id do is sharpen the prop and balance it just make sure you remove material from the correct face of the blades.

OK I got some good runs out of the boat the other day, I ended up having to add some weight to the left side to balance the boat,
and that basically fixed the rolling over. The prop is balanced and sharp but not perfect.

In this vid you can hear towards the end that the boats motor starts doing some weird things, any ideas what this could be????

I may be wrong due to the vid quality, but it almose seems like it's riding wet (most of the hull in the water). Maybe try and adjust your trim tabs up a little for less downforce of your hull. You'll find it dosen't take much adjustment and the hull will start coming out of the water a little more and pick up more speed.
As for your erratic sounds at the end, could be radio glitches? Water getting into the carb? Bad gas? a few other things come to mind, but she was running seemingly perfect for a while there. Great video, keep them coming!

I think it's running wet for sure, I've adjusted the boat but haven't been back out yet.

I'm looking into all those things that could be wrong with the way the motor was acting, I'll let you guys know.
