question about stampede stock esc?

question about stampede stock esc?
looking at the regular esc for the stampede electric not the vxl version, does the speed control require a servo to operate the throttle?

actually I just went to the lhs and the rotary stock esc that comes with the stampede does need a servo to operate

/\ those are mechanical speed controls and are pretty old school. i have one of the old school stampede's with a mechanical speed control. do these even exist anymore?
