25 to xl worth it
i have a 25 in great shape but the engine is blown rest of the truck in like new i have always keep it very clean because i keep it on my desk in my office. i love the xl but not sure i want to spend 600 on it. i think all i need in the chassis plates 60.00 and a new engine that i need anyway and savage x diffs rear only since most of the power will be sent to the rear not worried about the 7 inch tiers the 25 i have are still good. i could be over looking something, i have never had to take it apart since i got it new when it came out because nothing ever broke, if i need something else please let me know

You will need the rear shaft from transmission to rear axle and you will need the XL engine plate, actually, you just need the plate braces. They are cheap on Ebay though. The XL has the longer rear shaft and the new braces are arched in the middle. I suppose you could modify a stock set, but that is already a weak spot in the Savage design. Break an engine plate and then you start chewing up spur gears.
The length is fairly cheap to obtain, getting the XL width is a different story. Bud

That is all you will need and depending upon your engine choice, your 25 differential will probably run a long time. There is just a few ounces difference between an XL and a 25. Bud

He is going to run the X differential and off set wheels. It will get you very close to the XL width for a whole lot less money. He said he really was not worried about the width. Bud

RE: 25 to xl worth it
don't really need the fastest engine maybe the f41 will do fine for me . but i cant understand why it 10 bucks cheaper the the 25 could some one tell me. the reason i want to go with the xl chassis is because i will need to take it apart to put the new diff in when i get the more powerful engine so why not spend 60.00 more and get the longer chassis

Look at that![/link] I was going to suggest the F4.6 as I think it is the best of the Hpi big blocks, apparently I am not alone! I have two of those used and one unfired.

The F engine is on the right and I bought mine for 109 dollars plus freight on Ebay. That has to be a fluke auction, they are approaching LRP prices which is a super engine as well. Bud

RE: 25 to xl worth it
Is is a direct drop in, so is the LRP 28, the Sport Werks V2 .26 that the lug mentioned and many others. I would stay away from STS, Axial and the K4.6. I really love the Picco P3, I think it is the best engine on the market for the money. But it carries some baggage that does not cost much to get by, it is just a headache for a casual hobbyist to work through. The F would be a great choice, great power, everything is exactly the same as what you are used to, just a little stronger... make that a lot stronger... That Sport Werks is a very strong little engine... [8D]

RE: 25 to xl worth it
The ones I recommended or his stock ones? The ones I recommended are the carbon fiber ones. I thought the 25s came with them too. If he has the old 21 design plastic shoes, he will definitely want to just buy the three shoe kit. Bud

Yeah, stock the S25 came with plastic shoes as did the F 4.1 if I remember right. They work good with those engines, but anything better than those and I'd go wtih aluminum for better performance. I've never used the carbon fiber ones.

RE: 25 to xl worth it
HPI must've changed them on the later .25 engines. The shoes on my ancient S25 were most definitely plastic. Change in this case is very good.[8D]
