Super Flying King????
Any one building one of these? Looks like a really fun, relaxing plane......
There was one at the Joe Nall dropping a really cool RC sky diver.

I am
building the SFK. It is a great kit to build. Wood in the kit is the best I have ever seen. The wing goes together easliy. I have the Robart Fowler flap hinges that I think I'll try. I'm now carving the STOL wingtip option. Carving takes a major amount of time and my work keeps getting in the way ( I really hate when that happens).
Lots of angle cutting on the fuselage, but the structure is really strong. I did add some lite-ply doublers to the rear. I plan to tow gliders with a hook in the tail and wanted the extra strength.
I am making the vertical and horizontal stab removeable. The elevator servos will come off with the stabs. The rudder servo will be pull-pull and is mounted in the rear of the fuse just ahead of the vertical stab. Running a Ny-rod to the tail wheel.
There is ton's of room in the cabin. I am making inserts for a candy drop and a camera option and the bottom in that section will be removable. I will also have a release system for my Dave the Diverdude.
I am powering mine with a Brison 4.8 twin. That makes major modification of the nose necessary.
Radio is JR PCM 10SX, two R955 receivers, Matchboxes on the elevators and flaps, and a G460T gyro on the rudder for take off. Servos are Hi-tech 700's and 705's on surfaces and a standard JR on throttle, candy drop, camera, and sky diver drop.
Covering will be Nelson dacron and his latex paint.
Be happy to answer any other questions you have about the plane.
Think I'll take the afternoon off and go home and carve on the wingtips!

Cool....
What is the length of the Fuse? And each wing panel?
Does the center section stay attached when the wings are off?
Weight?
I built a 60 size King. Awesome kit.....

If I remember
I believe the length of the fuse is about 96" The wing is in three sections, two are 36" each, the center is about 65". The center section bolts on just like the standard Flyin' King. The chord is around 25".
Don't know what the weight is yet. Around 35-40 lbs I would guess.
If you've built the Flyin' King then you'd have no trouble with the SFK. I've had my FK for a long time, over 900 flights on it with a Saito 80.

Will try to get some soon
I will try to get some pics soon and post them.
If you go to www.wyomingmodelerspark.com and view the April 03 newsletter there is a picture of the wing and fuselage.

Super Flyin' King
I also have one completed and ready to fly tomorrow. I picked it up at Toledo from Bruce and it'll be a Product Review later this year in R/C REPORT Magazine.
Power is a G-62, servos are Hitec HS-700's, radio is a new Q-PCM from Hitec. The plane weighs 33.5 lbs dry and the wing loading is 22.5 oz/sq. ft. It should be a floater.
No problem balancing with 2 batteries just behing CG.
The span is 131.75 (no STOL tips) and the fuselage is 94", from spinner to elevator.
I also made the tail removable for transport and storage.
This is a BIG plane!

I love your reviews and purchased my Pitts Special because of your review on it.
I am building a Flying King that I also purchased from Bruce in Toledo.

It arrived!
Well, the poor UPS man came staggering up to the door yesterday with a couple huge boxes! They were so big that they were unable to climb up on top of them and dance like they usually do with my packages I started by looking at the wood selected and was happily suprised! Fantastic choice of wood in this kit. Then on to look at the plans and construction booklet, once again A++++. after an hour drooling, I had to get started. By the time I went to bed, the wing panels were all framed, and all I can say is, "If you have never built a Tharpe kit, treat yourself to one!" every notch is a perfect press fit, with all spars ending up exactly flush with the ribs! This thing is gonna be hard to set aside

I have the plans...
Bruce was nice enough to sell me the plans - I picked them up from him at the last Puyallup expo. Since then I've cut wing ribs out of 1/8th" ply (mostly air now with all the lightening holes and material cut away), bought balsa boards I've cut into longeron and spar stock and cut spar stock out of spruce for the center wing section. This is a BIG project! I have an Echo/Kioritz .61cc gas twin for it (similar to the BME twin) which should be ideal. Unfortunately I'm transferred this summer which will put building on hold for some time. Will likely cover mine with Koverall and dope. Looking forward to seeing pictures and hearing of your experiences with this fantastic giant. The Flyin' King is one of my favourite high wing airplanes - they just feel right.

Re Sad Departure From The Beautiful Pacific North West
Hi Wayne - good to hear from you. Yup, time to go - 10 years of flying all year long instead of shoveling snow 9 months of the year has finally gotten to me. I've volunteered for a job in Winterpeg (better than a posting to Cold Lake again) and have set a date of 01 Aug. I can extend that a month if I chose and will likely do so depending on selling/buying house situ. It might take some time to find the right house because we've got to get our priorities right, you know - flying field in the back yard, big workshop, big family room to store the planes in... when I get around to building that Super Flyin' King one of us is probably going to have to sleep in the garage! Hope to see you when you and your son come out again. Should be around end July time frame. Am still enjoying test flying your Dads planes - real nice job he did on that EAA Bipe. Cheers

Fiberglass Specialties ( www.fiberglassspecialties.com) has wheel pants for a 6 1/2 inches wheel.
Believe you built it with a little smaller wheel ans use these pants.
