RE: How to Apply Monokote over Paint
....you can iron the covering directly to the paint....no problem. You must use low
heat at first and gently adhere the film to the surface without expanding and wrinkling
the covering. If you do, the wrinkle won't shrink back out very well. The Mono-Cote
sticks ferociously to the paint.....better than to bare balsa.
Gradually increase the heat and go over it, progressing in heat and pressure about 3-4
times as necessary to get it stuck down good. If you hit it with a too hot gun at first. you
will see what I mean about the wrinkles. []
Start on the bottom of the wing, and get the technique down, before you do the parts that show.

I use windex to apply the Monokote trim pieces. I let them dry overnight, and then lightly go over the trim with a trim iron on low heat. Use a light touch. Scuff with scotch brite, and dust a few coats of clear on before a final heavier coat. The following planes all have monokote on paint (cowls, pants).
