Default RAM 1000

Hey All,
I have a RAM 1000 air start that needs a health check for sure. Was wondering if this engine can be made to electric or maybe full auto start?

thanks,.........Perry

Perry,
it is possible to have it upgraded to full autostart. I inquired about having my air-start 1000 upgraded back in may. and it was around $1000 for just the upgrade.

You'd be better off selling it and buying another that already is autostart.

That's correct. I just talked to Carlos on Monday and he told me that to update an air start Ram 1000 would be around $1,000.00. Can be done though.

i also believe he said that if an electric starter assembly is already in place on the motor (ALA jet-joe) the upgrade price would drop to around $750-800 ish....

I think Carlos can upgrade it onto a RTI 2800 SE if you wish.

it should not be that hard to do. You should be able to buy ecu ect from gaspar http://www.xicoy.com. you could make or buy starter from jetjoe or other make them for kj66.

I am currently converting my RAM 750. Got the jet joe starter which works well. Now going to get the jet joe ECU and convert it my self. Still cost around $5-600

You can do it for around $450 or less....
Starter cover(front cover + starter pod)-Modellbau-usa $120.00
Starter assembly (motor+bendix clutch) $28.00
Spinner nut Modellbau-usa $12.00
JJ ECU(more flexible than the RAM ECU) + 2 solenoid valves (JJ) about $280.00..............................
if you use a JJ starter pod, reduce total dollar amount by $70.00

I was told that you don't need to rebalance since you're not actually taking anything apart...... just replacing the nut.

I have my 750 in for the rest of the upgrade, and they're only adding a washer and reusing the original nut. It's like the kit you can buy from Gaspar.

Mark

If you ask me, a re-balance is recommended, yet if you are carefull enough to not move the compressor or turbine wheel from their positions you should be OK, I have convereted two RAM 750's, on both the compressor was tight in position, so they did not move through the process, remember, reputable WREN kits do not require that you rebalance the rotor assembly as long as you follow the keyed positions, the spinner nut may not always return to the original balance location, but they work perfectly...

BTW, if modellbau cannot be reached, you can still go with all JJ parts, they also have the spinner nut, it's the same size as RAM's.... and about $5....

That's true but Carlos said it depends on which starter motor it has. If it's not the right motor then it will have to be replaced also which brings the price back up. I just sent him my electric start 1000 which threw a turbine blade. I am hopeful that It can be upgraded for less than a grand as it will already be nearly that much for the repairs alone. []

I would contact Bob Price at RJP Models for a RAM-FTE-Modelbau ECU.

Bob is the man who made them.

Are you talking about the NGV?

Do you have a burn though on one of the stator blades? i.e. it looks like someone took a fine cutting torch an cut a slit in the stator.

As a last ditch effort these can be welded by a specialty weld shop

You need to get Inconel 625 RN82 weld rod for the repair; normally this would not be a cheep repair.
My friend had a NGV out of a RAM 1000 with this problem, I consulted my weld engineer at work to select the rod, then my friend took the NGV and the weld rod to a local weld shop that specializes in exotic welding.

After he told the owner the story that the part was out of a model turbine engine the owner said he would take a crack at it, he ended up not charging my friend...what luck

I need the outer case....

I tried to email Modelbau again. The mail was returned... Looks like they're out of bus...

Heading out to fly. I'll check back later.

Thanks!
