Dyed Kerosene
There is a gas station close to where I live that sells k1 red dyed kerosene (non taxable, off road use) that is less than half the price of kerosene at Lowes or Home Depot. Any of you use it? I know that I left some in a container for a year or so and the container got stained. Would the dye cause problems in a turbine?

Good deal. Maybe the inside of the turbine will turn red.
I remember in the old days when I was flying glow, I liked to use Cool Power fuel which was green in color. After a few gallons of fuel I opened up the engine to see how it holds up and to my surprise, the inside of the engine was completely green. Very cool.

You''ll have no problems attributed to the 'red' in red K-1.
If no one minds...a K-1 w/ lube question: I've a friend who cannot recall if he 5% lubed his fuel. How to tell appreciated (I do recall letting a small amount evaporate....it will be gone if no lube....oily residue if lubed..) Better method (short of brain transplant)? Tx!

Why is the kero dyed? In the midwest if you use dyed diesel in anything other than agricultural equipment and get caught its a pretty heafty fine.
Just a heads up

In some states kerosene is considered a taxable fuel and dyed red for off road use like Diesel. Dont kid yourself thinking you can use it for anything you want as long as its used off the gravel. If your looking to save a few bucks on fuel your in the wrong hobby! Lets see, take a chance on a 3K fine or buy a new JetCat...I just dont know[sm=72_72.gif]

RE: Dyed Kerosene
Mark, are you telling me that flying my jet is 'on road use'?
This is not about saving a few bucks. It is more like not throwing away money if there is an alternative, just as good as the more expensive product (more than double the price to be exact). Lowes sells 5 galons for $49, and I can buy 5 galons at the local gas station for $20. Clear choice for me. All I asked was if it causes any problems in the engine, I know I am not doing anything illegal by using dyed kero.

Well, lets see. You take off and land on a runway It probably a non issue and I can see the temptation in your case on cost although I have never paid that much for Kerosene even when the prices were sky high this past summer.
I personally wouldnt use it just to avoid any possible explaination, its dyed red not to make it pretty but to draw attention. Might be hard to explain that its just a hobby to the local authorities. Plus the red dye stains everything

You don't have to go to Lowes or Home Depot to buy clear K1. Around here some gas stations sell dyed K1 and some sell clear K1. In spite of the tax the retail cost is the same, and a lot cheaper than Lowes or Home Depot.
I have used both with no issues. The only thing I don't like about the dyed stuff is that over time it stains your fuel lines. If you use opaque lines then I guess it doesn't matter. I prefer clear lines so that I can easily check for bubbles.

RE: Dyed Kerosene
Does this all mean that you guys in the USA are using domestic kerosene to run your turbines on? Has anyone had any issues or do you just add turbine oil at 5% and forget all about Jet-A1?

The pump kero here i Phoenix is clear and after taxes its about $4 which is WAY cheaper than Kleenstrip at Ace Hardware. Kero has some road use, in the cold weather climates its commom to mix some kero in with the diesel for easier starting and help to stop the diesel from jelling up.
