Default My new totally over-kill work bench

I just finished construction of my new bench top. It uses 1/2" and 3/4" mdf in a torsion box construction. It is 7' long by 32" wide. the thing weighs a ton but is flat and will resist warping. I will let the pictures tell the story.

Looks like a good foundation for the flight deck of the USS Enterprise. Nice job.

Nice work - Years from now you'll be glad you took the time to do it right!

I just finished my new workbench and made a 6'x3' torsion-box top. Not quite as many inserts as yours, but it's nice to have a smooth, flat, level surface!

Here is the one that I built about 3 years ago. 8' x 3' with a 14 gauge steel top for magnet building. Torsion box, banded with oak, White pine base to hold everything up. You could drop a small block chevy on it and I don't think anything would budge. Works like a million bucks! Plus when the top gets dirty just get out the sander and polish it back up.

Looks like a good surface. What are you using for a base?

Also, how is the CNC Router project coming along?

The CNC is all finished and works!! I've got a few things cut, and played around with it some, but time has been hard to find to really get going on it lately. As it was {I on;y made it out to the field 3 times this summer. Hopefully this year will be better.

Thanks for the kind words. I need to get a base to it on. I'm thinking two base cabinets one on each end. Not sure who's router you are asking about but mine is currently wainting a power supply and the lead screws. Hopefully will be finished in the next month or two.

Talk about over kill here's my bench. I just finish putting two wood vises on the end and a removable metal vise on the corner. Here's a pic before adding the vises.

I'm currently building a modded-out SS60 and my son is assembling a fledging on the other side. At 4x8 i thought there would be plenty of room but now i could use another the same size. I guess you can never have too many benches.

John,

7' x 32" is a strange dimension. Was it by choice or your space limitations? What was your material list? I was thinking about about a similar table. Found the plans on line at DIY. I like it.

Here's mine. I think that various pics are floating around the boards already.

No plans. I just had around 35 years worth of ideas in my head that needed to come out. Bench Zilla is my center island bench which is used mostly for general assembly work. I have other benches dedicated for pin boards etc. That torsion box looks to be a real good design for building off of plans.

CDAUBS, which DIY site did you find plans for your new workbench? DIYnetwork.com?

Grrrr! Nice Benches

My garage is taken up with my metal Mistress' (1960 Triumph TR3 and 1980 TR8 cars) and their effects and I can't seem to wrangle a permanent spot to claim inside the house, so its on and off the kitchen and dining room tables and the kitchen island. I'm debating making a steel topped table top, maybe 3x4 foot, that I can slide under a bed or couch between jobs.

Gotta get those kids off to college! <grin>

MOSTLYKAOS,

I haven't built this yet, but plan to use this for my work bench top when I do. Here is the link to the plans:

jib,

I like the idea of the TR3 , but here's an idea....sell the TR8 (it's not really a sports car anyway [:'(] ) and then you'll have $$$ and space for your table

<LOL> Yet another Wedge Nay-sayer. I do love the TR3 more than the '8, but a 2,600 pound convertible, with an all Aluminum V8 is some amazing fun. Kind of like an oversized engine on a 3D plane.

My solution, which is still unacceptable to my wife, is a parking car stacker, so both cars can occupy the same garage stall, freeing up space for the work table. Unfortunately, it's hard to rationalize a $1,800-$2,500 device to make room for a work bench. 8^(

Later, and thanks for the entertaining thoughts!

This one isn't even in the same league as far as strength goes, but if your looking for a very practical workbench that doesn't take up alot of room when your not using it, but folds out to become a 4'x7' bench, check this one out. http://www.rd.com/familyhandyman/content/18265
I just finished building one and absolutely love it.

Thanks for the build pics!

This is a basic table that I have been looking for, and seems fairly easy and straight forward. Thanks again!
