Default What upgrades to do to a revo 3.3 (5309)

I have a revo 3.3 (5309). I finally got it running something was wrong with the EZ-START. I installed the pull start and it fired right up with a couple of little tweaks of the carb. I was wondering what upgrades should I do to the revo 3.3? It is stock. I just bash, I want it to do wheelies and I want a truck that does not break every other time I run it. The truck won't shift it to reverse but it will shift into second gear. I changed the reverse servo but I think it has gone bad again.

If you want to upgrade things then start with the things that you break most often. But remember that if you strengthen one part it could cause that stress to be transferred to other parts. List the parts that you have broken and maybe we can help you with upgrades. Not everything sold is an upgrade. Post some pictures, if you can, of the reverse servo.

The REVO is an awesome machine that does a lot of great stuff, but it is more of a RACING machine that has lighter parts. That is what makes it so fast, but it can introduce some dogging durability issues as well.

The HPI Savage and Team Associated MGT are both built like tanks. My experience is that they're heavier and slower (not as quick) as their Traxxas counterparts, especially the REVO. I've noticed that they have LOTS of things baked into their standard features that I've upgraded on my REVO.

For example, my brother has 4 different MGT's and has never pulled a single transmission, changed a single spur, popped a single engine, or had any major issues. Not to say he doesn't fix things...he does...but it is built VERY differently than my truck. Seems like I have my transmission out every month for one thing or another.

My point is just as Mr. Canuck stated: Fix or upgrade things as they break. If you're rich, fix everything THEN run the truck. But I promise that some of THAT stuff will break because you won't know/understand where the weakest link is. This is from a REVO owner that has been doing just that for over 2 years...

Look at the savage xl, steel dogbones, steel spur and cb, steel diffs all the way around, steel transmission gears. Built like a tank and very quick, it keeps up with a stock revo 3.3

I don't know how to post the picture it did not work. Here is the website of where I purchased it from. [link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXHFN5&P=7]SERVO[/link]

I'm always stripping spur gears,A-Arms,silver rods on front and back and the hub keeps stripping.

This is the last thing that I said that always stips

I will say this, do not put aluminum A-arms on it for bashing. They will cause you to break bulkheads, which are a PITA to replace. If you find yourself breaking a-arms constantly, get RPM ones. I am still running the stock ones, but have a set of RPM's sitting in my parts bin waiting for the inevitable break. The only other mods I would do are a FOC, put a metal spur on it(be sure to properly set the slipper), and run the [link=http://www.nitrorc.com/articles/clutch.html]clutch shoes[/link] as in picture one. I have a 2.5 Revo, and when I replaced the first set, I found them like in picture 2. Picture 1's setup "wedges" the clutch shoes into the bell which will make the truck launch quicker, which gives more wheelies. This setup also makes the shoes last longer in my experience. Figure 2, which was stock on my Revo, gives a softer acceleration because the shoes slip more at lower RPM, which is where you will wheelie.
The other thing to change is the stock servos. They work OK, but the steering can be much more responsive with 1 high torque metal gear servo, and you won't have the servo's fighting eachother if the linkage should slip out of alignment a little, just use an aluminum servo saver arm to replace the one that's meant for two servos.
Good luck and enjoy.

What is a good metal spur gear and where to get it? Do you need to upgrade anything else with that? I had a friend who had a t-maxx 2.5 and his whole trans was destroyed because of the metal spur gear.

If you get hardened parts, get Robinson Racing. and if you replace the spur, you MUST get a hardened pinion as well. I tried running a hardened spur with stock pinion...I keep the mutilated remains of my pinion in my bag to remind me not to ever again. Suffice it to say that only 2/3 of the pinion was still on the car...

Hardened spur/pinion won't hurt your transmission any more than plastic ones unless something else is wrong...such as having the slipper clutch way too tight. Stress will just find the next weakest link. Your buddy with the T-Maxx probably cranked down too much on his slipper after installing the metal spur/pinion.

Unfortunately, once you've spun a hub, the rim is usually toast. Good time to upgrade. Do yourself a favor...get rid of those CRAPPY black resin hex hubs. I have not clue why they are even packaged with the truck. Buy the Traxxas aluminum hubs or some other 14MM aluminum hub. I have not spun the inside of a wheel since going with the aluminum hubs. And if you're already down on wheels, do yourself a favor and invest in some 17mm or 23mm beadlock rims so you can replace tires easier. My brother has beadlocks and they're much nicer than messing with glue.

+1 on the RPM a-arms...they're the way to go.

I had to get some titanium suspension pins...Lundsford, I think. I broke the stock ones very quickly. Haven't broken the titanium ones...yet...

Like we've said...if you break something, look for an upgrade. Very few of my upgraded parts have broken since installing.

I would say go with a 3 or 4 shoe clutch setup depending on ur tastes and go for RPM a-arms and RPM bulks(replace only after the stock ones break obviously)...and maybe some new tires/wheels if u are so inclined...

I don't think RPM makes F/R BULKHEADS for Revo. Lord knows, I wish they did...I keep no fewer than 2 sets on hand. I seem go be replacing at least one of the bulkheads once a quarter...

Why does he need a metal spur gear ?

If the mesh and slipper cluthc are set right you wont be stripping them.

My first choice in picking upgrade is servos and radio. Then replace otehr stuff as it breaks if you want.
