Late Tiger I track width issue with RC Tigers
In my past experiences when viewing photos of late Tigers it sure does appear that the late tracks were WIDER (in overall width) than the tracks used on both early and mid Tigers. Early Tiger tracks had no ice cleats, mid and late both had ice cleats (though I have seen a few photos of mid tigers wearing tracks with no cleats). The ice cleat tracks on late Tigers definitely look wider than the cleat tracks on mid Tigers.
When looking at the aftermarket metal tracks that are available for 1/16 Tigers, the mid/late ice cleat tracks look to be the exact same width as the early tracks with no cleats. I see no difference in width, and this seems to be incorrect to me. Other than the addition of ice cleats they look the same as the early tracks. I've looked at some RC Tigers with so-called late tracks on them with the steel-rimmed road wheels and their tracks look too narrow when comparing them to photos of the real thing.
Has anyone else noticed this? Any comments?

There were only 2 widths of Tiger I tracks. The transport tracks and cross-country. They tend to look wide or skinny in photos for a number of reasons. Front fenders, camera angles and settings, whether the side guards are on or off, the steel wheels used only 2 versus 3 wheels per axle, etc.

I suppose it could be an optical illusion.. Perhaps because of the missing four outer wheels that were eliminated by the newer steel wheel design. Strange that this "optical difference" doesn't seem to occur on the 1/16 models. At least not on the ones I have seen.

It does when you look at tanks with missing side guards or the early skinny ones. Most folks take photos from way above their tanks and not at a scale human level. That would lead to fewer instances of the illusion being noticeable I would think.

The tracks are the same but the later tanks are missing the outer road wheels
My Tiger with early road wheels
Rebuilt Tiger with later road wheels (same tank and tracks)

Woz,
I like your HL Tiger late conversion. Did you scratch build the late style cupola? Were the other mods to the top of the turret done from scratch?
I looked into the cost of converting a Tamiya Tiger to the late version and it can get quite expensive. I imagine the HL conversion would be significantly less. I am investigating to see if a late conversion HL Tiger, that is IR battle ready (Tamiya compatible), would cost less than a stock out-of-the box early Tamiya Tiger that is IR battle ready. It seems like it would be, but not sure..

Most of the additional mods can be bought at rerasonable prices. It should still cost less to convert an early HL Tiger too a late tiger than any Tamiya although most of the parts except the road wheels and tracks are the same. That late coupola is a piece that can be purchased from a lot of suppliers. Sorry dont have a link handy but someone should.

The cupola is off a HL Panther, I moved the fume extractor from the back to the middle of the turret and made the periscope cover out of a bit of tin.

Woz,
Looks like you lengthened the gun barrel too. Are the steel road wheels plastic or metal? Tracks, plastic or metal? Is it set up for IR Battle or not?

It's still got the airsoft gun. Metal tracks, metal road wheels and Tam Toys high Torque gearboxes.

Though I've redone the vent covers to make them rusty.

I checked out the pics on your thread. I generally like what you did with this tank! The Pantiger cupola you used doesn't quite look right as the base of it is too tall, but otherwise it looks pretty darn cool.
What or who is Tam Toys? How much did those metal road wheels cost and where did you get them? What make metal tracks did you use? I notice your tracks don't have the ice cleats which were typically on the late tigers.
