Default 80+ as a goal...

Hello. This past fall I achieved speeds of about 55 mph on my Associated TC3... This was with a Sidewinder BL setup and 2S LiPo, aggressively timed and geared... I am aiming for at LEAST 70 MPH this year coming up and want to hit over 80 if possible... I was wondering what type of motor/batt setups others are using to do this, as I am thinking of taking a Mamba setup and 3S LiPo to the track to see how it does, 5700kv possibly... I've only ever used Castle motors/ESC for BL setups but am open to others...

I pushed a bandit to 70.9 mph on a 3S Lipo and a vxl system. The same set up should easily run mid to high 70s

the mamba max system is higher kv so it could be even faster.

I went 76.3 mph clocked by state trooper from great kills national park with my tt-01, traxxas vxl system 61/21 spur-gear and a 3cell battery on super grip tires in a 200 feet straight away.

I bet something like a 9000kv motor would get you close

All the posts about high KV motors are wrong. You want a motor no greater than 3000KV, run at a sufficiently high voltage. The 9000KV, 10500KV motors are not efficient enough and burn up around 60+mph. Nic was running a low KV Neu motor with an 8s LiPo and a Castle HV (High Voltage) ESC.

Exactly Voltage is your friend not KV.. You want to have the motor with the most tourqe and.. You can even use the 12s Castle Hv... That thing is a beast

So I know high KV motors aren't good for off road, and apparently they're no good for on road either, so what are high KV motors good for?

Basically going as fast as possible on 2s, b'cos as ROAR racing rules limit 1/10th scale to 2s, 1/8th scale to 4s, and so on.
Also a lot of people buy based on numbers, just like with digital cameras, computers, etc., they will always buy the item with the highest number (KV, megapixels, clock speed, etc.)

And a 10,500KV won't have less torque than a 2200KV (provided they are from the same family), I posted an in-depth explanation of why here:
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_71...tm.htm#7137044

The reason for using a higher voltage is all about efficiency. When you use a higher voltage, you have to use a lower KV motor, as to not over-RPM it.

Makes sense now.

Well of course. There are limits to how fast you can spin an object before it just flies apart.

I like the speed... not going to go for records yet. This co-worker with a Jato thinks he "has something" for me, but I kicked his ass last year, and want to completely destroy him this year (last year he ran me over on purpose... ) haha! Really I just want a silly fast on-road.

Losi designed there Sensored brushless systems botht he ESC's and the motors to run on 3s. Thats right even the 3.5T motor is designed to run on a 3s lipo, so you could try that. I have the system and it is a really good system, I just don't have a 3s Lipo to try it out with. And hey of the 3.5 does break Losi should replace it because they said there stuff will handle a 3s lipo.

Run the 7700 or 9000 for speed runs only on 3s and you will get 70 plus+++++. I have seen this on you tube. The people who drag race run high kv motor look on castles web site this type of setup is only for short run times because heat.

I broke 100 mph in our local hobby shop speed runs. we were running 1/10th mile runs approx. 600 ft. to reach ur top speed. I ran Xray T1-FK04 with two 4000maH 3 cell 35c max amp batteries, with Monster Max ESC, Mamba Max 4600 kv motor. It had 23t pinion and 87 spur. Motor didnt thermal and bc of the short distance did not reach high enough rpm to do damage to the motor. of course i had to make custom adjustment to help balance the weight of the batteries on the car. the batteries weighed as much as the car. get creative, and do ur math.

Look into outrunner motors. They can have low KV, so you can put more volts through, and as said earlier in this thread, that is better.

And a bit off topic, on craigslist I saw some modded chevy drag cars that run 11's in the 1/4. would a 1/10 be able to beat that? I mean they get up to about 100 in 1-2 seconds and 1:1 cars to get too much over that. but it takes them a lot longer.

That chevy might take 3 sec to hit 60mph.... so if the rc can have a high speed... yes it can
