Default BME 58 vs DA 50

Does anyone know how these engines compare in performance? I am looking to power a rather large 50 size bird so the 58 is appealing to me. That's if it will actually out perform the DA. It looks like they both swing the same prop. Any input would be great.

Thanks!

Wait for RTK to post o this since he has both. I know he seems to prefer the BME but his will provide more background.

I've had both on the same plane, EF Yak. They both perform well, but the 58 is definitely more powerful by a few hundred rpm on the props I have run. The throttle-ability of the 58 is very nice, whether on a pipe or a stock muffler.. If you are looking to save weight and have a little extra power I would go with the 58, no substitute for cubic inches The BME weighs 2.7lbs and the DA comes in at 2.94lbs. Service with the new owner of BME is great, and everyone knows how good DA's is. You can't go wrong with either engine in my opinion.
Not very many 58's out there, but tired old man and Altivillian both can comment on how the engine runs. I have basically pushed/abused this engine from the first time I flipped the prop, set the needles on the first tank and treated it like any other engine I own. WOT KE and flat spins. I guess I have about 4-7 gallons of gas through it and all is still well.

Perfect! Thats what I am going to do. I have a DA in an AW Yak and its decent but I wanted more punch for my EF Extra. Midrange and transition is solid?

RTK's EF Yak at almost 18lbs has the most acceleration from hover I've seen in a gasser. It is foamy power. Combine that with the three bearing design to support the hollow crank in the BME and it should be the obvious choice for 88" airplanes. And it is a very smooth single cylinder engine. I admit it I'm jealous. It's the only engine that would tempt me to remove the 3W56 twin from my EF Yak. At least my plane is prettier and smoother with the twin.

About 200 rpm same prop. But 1lb heavier.

Yeah. Still a cool engine. I was orig going to use the Brilellli 366GT but thats obviously not an option anymore. I liked the MVVS 58 too. Its a stump puller but no real support in the US and the Evolution isn't the same as the Prosport. I am pretty sure now that I am going to go with the BME.

I've been having some rare considerations of obtaining another 50cc engine. If it was to happen it would be the BME 58. I've very much liked what I've seen with tthe way RTK's performs.

Only problem with the mvvs58 is that it is pretty heavy, and to get those big numbers out of it you have to pipe it. I believe that is the way it is quoted in the adds, all on pipes, could be wrong.
rcignition (Ralph) just ran one that he had in for repair, without that pipe I think both 58's are pretty much equal in power. Either way for that matter, but I have never owned the mvvs.
I'm still dinking with my pipe length, and hoping to hit about 34++ lbs static thrust on my old trusty fish scale. I prefer to be in the 2:1 thrust to weight range on my planes[8D]

Yeah it was getting around 8 hp with a pipe.

The ProSport has:
-heavy duty bearings throughout,
-a titanium central prop drive bolt.
-redesigned crankshaft
-heavy duty connecting rod
-redesigned cylinder porting for wider power range
-piston adapted to porting changes
-Added intake horn on carburetor

It swings a 26x10 6000+ rpm and a 24x10 7000+ rpm. But its a little more than a pound heavier.

That being said I think the 116 Xtreme is the same weight as the MVVS 58. Now THAT would be CRAZY in a 50 size bird! ;-)

I think I had one of the first few 58's from BME. Tom told me to go ahead and beat it like a rented mule, and I have. Heck I didn't even baffle it, which I do for all my gassers, will be working on that next.
A decent 24x10 at 7000 is monster power, something like 44lbs thrust according to Pe Reviers spread sheet. Since I don't own any 24" props I might try and stick a 26x10 on mine just for kicks.
