I just read in the latest RC REPORT that 3M has changed the
formula of their adhesive in 77 to be environmentaly safe.It now
EATS STYROFOAM.So beware of using it!!!The new stuff is in spray cans with NO red stripes,just a red tint.

Yes, the ingredients in the 3M adhesive spray changed well over a year ago actually..

I believe the product used to contain the chemical toluene but thanks to California Prop 65 and EPA VOC issues they had to remove it and so they went with a "much safer" chemical....acetone!

It's the acetone that's the problem, so if you're unsure of whether the can is new or old just check the labeling....acetone is clearly spelled out on the new cans, while I believe toluene should be on the old...

Rats.......3M was so good to use on foam wing cores and sheeting plus other uses.

What is a good substitute?????

It will still work on foam, as long as it is put on in very light coats. Saturate it, though, and it will be eaten.

Tolulene(sp) is a chemical that is great for cleaning parts and what not, but it can also be used for making meth and or some other drugs. I assume this is a reason for it's discontinued use. Although I'm sure the bunny huggers had something to do with it also.

So acetone is safer huh??? I though the it was easily absorbed through the skin and is hard on the liver and nervous system.....twitch, twitch!!!

So far the best stuff I have used for sheeting wings is Elmers Probond Urethane. Hands down.... thumbs up...

Acetone is the basic chemical to refine cocaine. So this is not the reason for discontinue using tolulene. Must be other environmental reason.

I don't know if it's of any use to anyone, but in Canada 3M did not change the formula. I used it on a current project with no problems.

Just checked the label on my can and it sure is acetone instead of toluene.

I have two untouched 16.5 ounce spray cans here. It mentions items it will 'securely bond', one of which is polystyrene foam.

The ingredients are listed as:
nonvolitile components, 2-methylpentane, dimethyl either, isobutane, propane, methylpentane, 2,3-dimethylbutane, 2,2-dimethylbutane, n-hexane and other hexane isomers.

I don't see the word 'toluene' on the cans.

I forgot I even had them.

I quit using it years ago. It was great for foam wings, but has some of the highest cancer causing crap in it from what I hear. I use 3M #924 transfer tape. It works as well as anything I have ever used. I like it. Use it on everything from 1/2 A to my 135 inch wing gliders. Never had it unstick.

Tolulene is the chemical "huffers" look for in aerosol cans to get high. Thats why products with it are being scrutinized. The product is sprayed into a plastic or paper bag and the fumes are inhaled. It was the chemical that was used in model airplane glue back in the 70's before they pulled it from the market and changed the formula. How many of you remember those days? Went to the hobby shop and all they had to sell was stuff that smelled like lemons. You could get a better bond with Elmers glue!

If you need a spray contact cement try 3m's trim adhesive spray...#08074. It wont attack foam and it seems to have a better grip than the 3m77. I've used both when sheeting and i prefer the 08074. Then I read in Model Aviation during that large Extra construction article that the builders alos used 08074.
Give it a try!!!!

I've heard that DURO makes a spray adhesive that is a replacement for the 77. Anyone know anything about that?

I bought some of the Duro spray adhesive, Acetone is one of the ingredients.

Be sure to try anything on a piece of foam you don't want!
I have a sheeted wing with the foam collapsed inside after it melted the foam.
Flies, but not the greatest.

Sig makes a pretty good "contact cement" type product that works great for balsa sheeted foam wings. I think its called Sig Bond. WOrks really well if you follow the instructions on the can. However it doesnt work well for the foamie gliders which is where I will miss the 3M the most!
