Default Flex Header Repair

Hello,

Have a new used plane (almost new) and this is my first experience with canisters and headers.
The MTW 110 cansiters are mounted to a DA-150 with flex headers. One of the headers developed a leak in the flex section that was wrapped in teflon tape.
These are installed on a Comp-ARF 3m Extra 260. (See attached pics.)

What, if any, is the recommended repair and/or appropriate material to fix this????
What is the purpose of the teflon tape wrapped on the flex secton?????
Is the teflon tape standard plumbing grade tape ???

Thank you,
Jaketab

The teflon tape, a normal plumbing grade, serves to prevent the flex header from leaking. Tightly wrap a few layers. Degrease the flex part before you do.

All flex headers start seeping the black stuff sooner or later. Just clean it good like PE said , wrap about 3-4 layers of plumbers tape around it and call it good. BUT....if it's actually broken...you could have it welded while it was on the aircraft so you don't lose your correct bend. But you have a chance of getting some of the weld inside the pipe and could cause performance issues. Worst case scenerio ......you might have to get a new header if it's broke. OR....you could get some new flex from A.I. and try to re-soder the new flex into place. Hopefully it's not broke.

Has anyone had experience with using some products made by Permatex?
They make exhaust compounds, sealers, and band-aid tapes claiming to withstand 1000 degree F + temps.
See attached link.
