Nothing! Just buy a stainless steel wire brush and brush everything clean.

I've used silver solder on copper exhaust I made for a OS 120 twin 4 stroke. It worked fine and the heat hasn't melted the solder yet.

Someone already tried to make a fiberglass exhaust with high temp resine?

spitfireboy, that's a new one for me to hear that you can weld aluminum with a propane torch. In the twenty years that i've been a welder i've never heard that. Can you show us that.As far as i know the only way to weld aluminum is with a tig welding machineand argon gas.

Aluminum can be welded with any of the common methods used to weld steel. I have used both TIG and MIG to weld Al. Those are probably the two most common methods. I've heard of some old timers using A/O and even stick but have no experience with either of those. I think the guys using propane are actually soldering the aluminum, rather than truly welding it.

No, you can actually weld aluminum with a propane torch, I too have tig and migged my way across the aluminum stock pile of things, but it can be done with an aluminum alloy rod. The trick is to scrub the oxidation off the surface and preheat it while removing the oxidation, then finding the correct temp is a hit or miss, but basically you heat it till the internal temp starts to flow, then poke through the surface skin with the alloy rod. The surface gets a skin due to the cooling effect of aluminum, but the internal core will melt, but it's a fine line between welding it to another piece and just making a puddle of scrap aluminum.

I think the rod you're talking about is similar to [link]http://www.durafix.com/[/link]. You will find this stuff at flea markets, auto shows, Toledo, etc. I've had both good and poor results when trying to joint the aluminum together, I can normally duplicate the poor results time and time again, the good results just seem to be luck of the draw. I would not consider this process welding, more like soldering.

Hi guys, I have located some Hi temp epoxy. It is a two part and they claim it will hold up to 2,000 degress which far exceeds anything it would be sujected to. I will let you know how it works

Ihave made several Custom exhaust systems for YS four stroke engines useing Stainless Steel tubingand "Safety Silver Brazing Rod". This is real Silver Solder Brazing Material and can cannot be compared to soft silver sloder. The Safety Silver melts and Flows when the SS is Cherry Hot. It is Extremely styrong when done.</p>
