Default Lrp.30 engine is it as strong as they say it is

Whats up guys i have been reading up on this new lrp .30 engine with 4.12 hp. Is it as strong as they say it is? I'm looking to buy a spare motor for my savage xl but i don't know what will be the better buy for speed and power. I know the lrp .28 and the .30 are suppose to be good engines along with the axial .28 rr and the picco .28. Any suggestions?

I'm sure budbud will chime in but from what I've read the picco .28 is a little stronger then the lrp .30. Also don't believe manufacture claims... they're bs. No .28or biggerBB makes over 2.1hp in stock formwhen on a real dyno.

I bet when BudBud wakes up he is going to crings at the thought that Axial and Picco were in the same sentence!

So the picco is the best way to go? Also I wanted to know if I change my spur gear from 52 to a 49 will it kill the performance of my savage xl. Right now I am stock 16 clutch bell and 52 spur. I want a little more big end.

Picco28 >/= LRP30 > LRP 28 > Axial

I am running a 16/47 on my LRP30 powered XL and it still pops wheelies easily while having a great topend.

The picco has the most cajones but you'll need to seal it up. Some don't need to be sealed but the piccos are known to leak at the carb and backplate. Onced sealed they are a very reliable motor.

The lrp .28 and 30 seem to be a little easier to tune and are less finicky out of the box, with a little less power then the picco.

Sounds good. I will probably re gear it this week and experiment. As for the picco it sound like you get more hp for the money.

You will find the LRP 30 to be very close to a stock Picco in power with a little less RPM. It is a very nice engine to run, easy to tune and has the nicest carburetor I have used so far. If it is flat out speed you want, the Picco 28 is faster. If a good strong reliable powerhouse is what you want, the 30 is your choice. It will easily drive and XL faster than the truck is stable. I am a Picco guy, but my 30 is a very nice engine. Glen

The Piccos, like most engines, need a little adjustment daily....unless you live in a very stable temperature and humidity. The tunng window on a Picco is much smaller than the 30. As far as holding a tune, the 30 will have the upper hand as it does not have the radical timing and porting of the Picco. If you are a guy that really does not care to mess with the tune, the LRP is much more forgiving. If you do not mind minor adjustments everyday for a stronger running engine, the Picco is fine. They are both great engines. If you are fairly new to the game, I would recommend the LRP. Glen

Isnt the LRP30 carb a composite/metal assembly as well? Looking at the pictures, it appears to be... Why is this carb so much better than the stock Picco?

Are there two types of lrp .30 engine.  I see one has 7 plus 1 and the other has 5 plus 1 port plus there is a difference in price.

Looking at the video this engine has a lot of power. For the savage xl which would work better the lrp 30 x are the regular lrp 30 ? I drag race my truck mostly when i'm not doing that I like to bash.

You have no choice for a Savage, since we have to have a pull start. However, it seems they used the same crankshaft in both engines, so if you can purchase the pull start backing plate and pull starter separately, you can have the additional ports. The two extra ports though are relief ports at the bottom of the sleeve and not additional intake or exhaust. Normal engine people would not actually count those as ports. Whether or not you gain any noticeable power our of the cuts in the bottom of the sleeve is still out for debate. Glen

So really they are the same engine pretty much minus the two extra ports. Basically the lrp 30x is more for a buggy are truggy. Do they have a drill start back plate for the regular lrp 30?

I am sure somebody sells a rotostart backing plate of some sort. The one is supposed to be a truggy engine, but the differences are minor. You should really give the pull starter a chance though as these are easy engines to start. Glen

Hey Glen, have you had any issues with the your pullstarter grinding a hole in the fuel tank?

None, but mine is in an XL... this would not be the first one to have that issue if you do not pull straight up.. Glen

I started to yank on it like a mad man when it wouldn't start and it was just frustrating me, so that's what I get :P
