Default Tuned Exhaust Animation - Even Better!

Hello everyone,

This animation is even better....it shows the problem with the pressure wave in the pipe when it is both too long and too short (in addition to being the correct length of course). I have always been a better visual learner so I find this kind of thing great for gaining a better understanding of what is going on and how this works. I have again included the link below for those that are interested. This one is much better...check it out!

On a related note, is there anyone out there that considers themselves pretty knowledgeable on this subject and would be willing to PM me so we talk over the phone sometime? I am starting to line up a winter project to build the Giant Aeromaster kit and want to specifically discuss some compact exhaust set-ups for the rather small cowl. I am considering the G-62, the DA50 and the BME 58 Extreme. I am doing my research on the extreme mostly because it is so light (as has been discussed on RCU) and I know the Aeromaster tends to build on the heavy side.

Thanks guys...looks like great weather for the weekend and it is my clubs annual fun-fly event and fundrasier. Life is good!

Tom

Pretty cool. I stared at it for a while.

Nice animation although it's not quite right about how the tuned pipe functions.

How does it function then?

In a nutshell; the reflected wave comes back from the end of the divergent cone and it doesn't reverse the flow at the exhaust port. Rather it stops the outflow while the port is still open. It's the scavenging that increases power.

That animation and narrative was cribbed from Wikipedia. Too bad that the Wiki contributor didn't fully understand tuned pipe function. BTW, tuned pipes can be applied to 4 strokes too.

Actually that is not right either, a sharply tuned pipe system will slightly increase cylinder pressure when the positive wave hits the exhaust port. This is not usually the case with broad tuned low "Q" tuned systems but the peaky high horsepower in a small RPM range tuned system will raise cylinder pressure a bit.

Most of the power increase comes from increased volumetric efficiency or pumping action with a pipe.

Quit splitting hairs and just go stare at the animation like I did. It's fun.
