SM F-18c Speedbrake/pipe conflict..
Sorry my phone is screwed up so I cant post a picture right now. There is little to no room between my speed brake cylinder and the wye area of my pipe (in back). I have some heat shield blanket so I'm not worried about the heat on the airlines. What I don't like is that the thrust end of the pipe Is inside of the thrust nozzles about 1/2" to 3/4" with the speed brake down, I tell you this because the cylinder pivots forward with the brake down and this is when it is the closest to the pipe, Thus I must move the pipe forward to keep a minimum gap between the two, Otherwise they would touch..
Also I cant just move the pipe forward and get a nice gap in there because I don't think I would get the turbine/pipe spacing I would need.

Well, can anyone tell me the distance you ended up with when the speedbrake is down and Ill just go with that?

Pete,
With the speed brake in the down position, I have approx 3/4†clearance between the air cylinder and bifurcated pipe.
I fitted a 7/16†x 3.25†Ultra Precision air cylinder which is attached to the top of the rear former and used some teflon tubing leading up to the cylinder. The teflon is heat resistant to 260 C (500 F).
The aircraft has flown a few times without any heat issues.

I have my speed brake ready set up on my Hornet (Jet Legend), and the geometry looks very simillar to George's. However, I'm a bit apprehensive about using it because the there is very little force holding the speedbrake closed. At the end of the travel, the cylinder lies very close to horizontal resulting in a very limited closing force. So, I've secured the brake closed at this time because I'm afraid suction will pull it open at high alpha. Any experience / recommendations?

Thanks guys. I think I'm going to try to use the setup I have. Get a minimum clearance and attach heat blanket to the pipe where it will get close.

Hello Pete
On my Xtreme F-18 i wraped my cylinder with hi temp aluminum tape. it worked verry well and i had no problems with the heat.
