Default Painting resulted in a run

In spray painting the wheel pants on my Extra, there was a run on the bottom. I know I can sand it out smooth and it will be flat but not shiny. What is the next recommended step? Can I buff it? If so, what medium should I use? Or should I spray it with clear urethene (I'm sure I would have to spray both wheel pants to match)? The paint was PPG DCC white acrylic urethene. The total area of the run is about 1/4 by 1/2 inch.

Thanks,

Cajuncharley

Im not an expert as I too have been thinking of getting into painting cowls and wheel pants soon with a possible winter project. From what Ive read, your problem might be resolved by sanding the run with really fine sand paper...what is it 600 grit( the wet sand stuff). Take your time and maybe back the paper with a peice of wood so its nice and flush. Then coat with clear cote. That should fill the swirls and bring out the shine evenly.

Can someone confirm this for us.

You might be able to work it out with a tool called a diamond nib. Its a small metal block imbeded with fine diamond dust, used to remove boogers from the finish coat. If it were mine, I'd probably just sand it out and re shoot it.

sand it with 320- 400 and give it 2 more light coats. much quicker than trying to get the run out,and you will likely just burn thru anyways, trying to polish it.

Thanks for the comments. I tried sanding only the runs but not snding through the paint, but was not successful. I'll have to repaint. I should have known, but will have this experience to help me be more careful in the future.

Thanks,

Cajuncharley
