Default Futaba 14MZ or JR 12X ?

On the back of cmjets post asking if he should use JR 12X or Futaba 14MZ I thought I'd put a poll on to find out what the split is.

Default RE: Futaba 14MZ or JR 12X ?

I assume that the 12x will win, if for no other reason than that is where the momentum and "culture" within the jet community are (?)

That said, my father and I have each flown 14mzs for 2 years, trouble and glitch free. They were originally 72s, and we were early adopters of the first 2.4 conversion modules. The extra channels offer the luxury of two each flap, ail, and elev channels. No matchboxes. Lots of versatilty.

The 14mz MAY be easier to program, but that's heavily dependent on which format you are used to, and thus heavily subjective.

On the down side? We MUST each carry a spare battery, as the 14mz's screen (which can be hard to see in some light conditions) gobbles up Mah. But then again, the JR xmitter batts have occasionally been a point of contention with regard to reliability, so that may be a wash. The 14mz is heavier than the JR, and that may bother some folks.

I hoped these few obsevations have helped, but having no direct 12x experience, I can't honestly offer more.

Regards, Don.

Don

it would seem the 14MZ is in the lead at the moment. I think (but may be wrong) the Futaba 14MZ is the most used of the two in the UK but neither of the two main jet retailers promote it...

You have left out the 14 channel Futaba 12 FG which seems the best value set for jet modellers at the moment. I for one would rule out the 14MZ and JR 12X on cost grounds.

Is there an equivalent 12/14 channel JR set up to the Futaba 12FG?

Ditto....Futaba 12FG, great value for the money, and it also can use all 14 channels, something that Futaba doesn't seem to want to advertise

I think the 12 FG is used at least as much if not more than the 14 MZ in in the UK but I just wanted to see what the split is on the two top end radio's.

By the way, went to fly your Sprite in the F-86 again today but the weather was no good when I got there :-(

I love my Futaba FASST 12FG, and my Futaba FASST 12FG loves me. Both of them !

If Dave Wilshere and Paul Gray would care to chip in, I'll supply the handbags.

Multiplex?
Airtronics?

They also make neat radios. I like the sd-10g much better than the two mentioned.

JR 12X here. After 3 Futaba failures in a row, all confirmed by Futaba as transmitter failures, I will never trust my models to Futaba again. 16 years now with JR and not a single issue with transmitters, receivers, servo's or otherwise.

Neither 12X nor 14Mz.

My trusty 10X works just fine, thanks, and I currently see no need to change (especially at the ridiculous prices for these newer transmitters).

As a 12X owner and previous 14MZ/12Z owner, I can say that I prefer the programming flexibility of the Futaba systems. However, I prefer Spektrum over FASST. With that said, I think the 12X is overpriced for what you get. A Nihm battery, no ability for the user to upgrade firmware. Seriously? Is this 1999?

Got one of the very early 12X's from Don's Hobbies in Salina, KS, May, 2008. Now have it set up with either 1221 or 1222 in all my planes including BVM F-100D and F-4, as well as BCARF, BARF, KC and Boomer XL. All work flawlessly since new. Never a frame loss, and usually fewer than 10-15 fades, once you get the remotes properly situated. The early deal from JR was great. The 12X came with one 1221 RX + you got a voucher for (2) free 1221's if you bought (2) for $229.00 each. So got (5) RX for $458.00........the early special price on the 12X was $1299.00 from a couple of dealers. With few exceptions, all data from my 10X's transfer directly to the 12X.

I have now switched to 1222.....I like the dual high power inputs with EC-3 connectors and 16ga wire, the internal failsafe switch, as well as all (4) RX/Antenna being remoted so I can bury the main RX wherever it works best, as it has no antenna on it, and widely disperse the RX in all orientation planes.

Chad at Sin City Jets introduced the use of the 2000 maH Eneloop NiMh packs for the 12X.....now can fly all weekend on one charge.......he also was one of the first to introduce convenient, low cost access to A123 which I have in most of the 12X installs now.

12Z

14 channels with dual processors, easy to program, nice case, and at $1499.00 might still be cheaper that the 12X

16 years? Which Futaba gave you trouble? Was it a FG gold metal case and a AM module in the back? I've flown Futaba for 30 years, never had a failure or warranty repair.
10C. Does what I need it to do. Replaced my 9C.

The first 2 were both brand new Futaba Conquest 7 radio's, they came out at the same time as the 8UAP. They were on the market for 11 months before being pulled. One radio crashed a Piorun Meridian pattern ship and the other a Byron Sukhoi. Both radio's were sent to Futaba. Futaba admitted that transmitter design had a fault, there was a metal plate in the transmitter that could short out the board, happened to both my radio's. In an effort to make up for the losses suffered, Futaba replaced both of those radio's with the then new 8UAP, I give them full credit for stepping up with that. I flew for not quite a full season with both 8UAP's, then while setting up a new Meridian pattern plane, the ailerons started going goofy, bouncing all over. After changing servo's, leads, receivers, tx modules etc I sent the transmitter back to Futaba, I was then informed that the aileron gimbal pot had failed completely without warning. That was enough, 3 radio's in a row. I had them repair it and I sold all my Futaba stuff.
I almost jumped on the 14MZ wagon but waited until a few others bought them first. I know of 3 people that lost airplanes where again it was admitted by Futaba to be a problem with the radio. I wasn't willing to take that chance either.
I have owned many Futaba's in the past including the old Brown box 4 channel, Gold Boxes (which always worked flawlessly), the conquest series, the 8UAP, a 9VAP, and a 9ZAP WCII. Out of 8 Futaba radio's, 3 transmitters failed on me. Of JR's I have owned an XP622, XP8103, XP347, XP9303, 10SXII (2), 10X (2) and now a 12X. I have never had a problem with my JR stuff.
That's certainly not to say there aren't problems with all manufactures, but for my personal satisfaction, I'll stick with what I'm comfortable with

Well, valid point, I'd do the same. I used the Attack, 5U, 7U. 9C, 10C, never had a problem, still own the 5U, and 10C.
I have a JR7202, still new in box, can't figure out the programming every time I pick it up to give it a go. Always foreign programming from the Futaba, maybe it's just me. I always need the manual to select channel and get into the menu.

I know the new Futaba's are better, but part of what I loved so much about JR was how easy they were to program compared to the 9VAP and the 9ZAP series radio's, you needed a freakin degree in computer's to figure them out haha. I love the JR programming, but I guess it's what I'm used to now

Jeremy,

Agreed concerning the 9ZAP programming, but the latest generations are MUCH MUCH better in comparison.

Come feel the difference! J/K
