Default 3D Aircraft Recommendations for .60 2cy

If you were to buy a capable 3D aircraft for anOS .60, what would you buy? I have been looking at the AeroWorks Edge 540T 46-60, but woulda 2cy 60 be enough power to make that a capable 3D aircraft? What are your suggestions for an ARF, build, or flatout? Thanks !

OS .61FX ? Strong but heavy for today.
The power curve is realy not suitable for 3D, but will work with some tuning and prop selection. Likely a profile, as a full fuser will need optimum set up. Maybe some of the OMP offerings are suited best.

Agreed. Plus, the Aeroworks planes are known to be real porkers. That Edge is going to come out noticeably heavier than other planes its size. OMP profile plane would be my recommendation.

Like you, I am looking as well. Although I do not have any experience with this plane, I am considering the Glamour from Abellrc. Its kinda a funky looking plane, but I'm tired of looking at the same stuff all the time.

It looks like its a good flying machine from the 1 video I saw.

The best flyers are kits from [link=http://www.swanyshouse.com/index.aspx]Swanyshouse[/link] and ARF's from [link=http://www.ohiomodelplanes.com/]OMP[/link].
55AX is a far better choice for a motor, but that engine would work OK on a lightly built 40 size from either of the above.

Of course the best info on the net about 3D and profiles is at:

Oh yeah, forgot to add that if I do not get the Glamour it will probably be the Primo (from Swaynshouse). I saw one of these in person and they are good performers.

Maybe a chinn yak from Extreme Flight. Although they're kinda fragile( no more than a fatty) they fly good, and tend to be a little tail heavy.

I actually have an OS 61SF ABC engine from 15-20 years ago. Ok, it is old, but it still runs strong! That EF Extra 300 sounds good. I would prefer a full fuse, but I understand it may may make more sense to start with a profile. Now that you know it is an OS 61SF, what do you think? Could it hover the EF Extra 300 or something similar? What about the Great Planes Extra 300SP 55"? Thanks all!

I doubt the .61 would perform much in the EF Extra, its a good sized bird, just my guess though. I could see it flying OK on the wing and up to speed, but I think it would fail at low and slow. It just doesnt have the low end thrust to play 3D

Nitro wing, thanks for the quick reply. What about the GP Extra 300SP? It looks like a smaller plane. Thanks!

If you truly want to fly 3D with an OS 61SF, then your options are going to be very limited. About the only planes I can think of that have half a chance of flying 3D with that engine are the Mojo 60 and the Katana 70. I know those two choices will work because I used to fly a Kat 70 with an OS 61FSR.

Any of the full fuselage planes will too heavy for 3D with an old OS 61SF. Choosing a smaller plane to keep the weight down will end up raising the wing loading beyond an acceptable 3D range.

I've see one with an OS55, it was fassst. I really do not know how it would do with a 61 and slower pitch prop, so it could 3D.. maybe the ucando40?
I know its a good engine, just the power curve is not ideal. If you are good on the sticks the H9 showtime 50 may work too,not sure on the 50 size Funtana, I had 2 of its bigger brothers ,they were OK. Also the GP Cap 232 could work. PAU is giving away the cap maniac, that may also do. Best would be the profiles or another motor. look around, there are some options to try.

I had a TWIST 40 with a Magnum 61 2C and it flew great, well at least as good as a Twist could fly (IMHO to heavy for it’s size). The Twist is strong for learning 3D but has one week spot in the fuselage by area just behind the trailing edge. Could add some wood to that area and you at least be in the air fast. Start working on a profile while you fly the Twist and try to pick up a OS 55 or TT 46. If you want to build try a profile kit from OMP or a MOJO. The Twist is just ok with a 46 2C and the 60 will hover it solid. I go by flying weight when I pick a plane for 3D,..... 4 lbs use a 46 to 55,...... 5lbs use a 61 , and 6 lbs 91 for 2C engines. The AeroWorks Edge may be to heavy of a 61. I would use a 91 or 120 2C on that plane.

A Twist 40 and a Mojo 60 weigh close to the same. If anything, the Mojo 60 is lighter by at least 1/2 a pound, probably more. Plus the Mojo 60 has 33% more wing area than a Twist 40. The lighter weight combined with the larger wing area will make the Mojo 60 much easier to fly 3D than a Twist 40.

I agree, but the Twist is $120 built and will take some ground hits. MOJO is a better plane and one of the best designs but no ARF's.

Fly a Twist first, build a MOJO and he could use the same engine after the Twist is worn out.

The Twist also takes in flight abuse and will not come apart if mistakes are made like to much throttle. Great plane to learn how top do a blender.
