Default Which Nihm 5000?

Hey guys, Iwas just wondering what your thoughts were on different brands of 7 cell 8.4V 5000mah battery packs? The first pack I purchased was the Tenergy brand 5000 and really like the power it puts out and the longevity of it. After that battery pack I purchased the Duratrax DTX 5000 and so far have noticed a small difference is power (less than the Tenergy) and a pretty big difference in longevity (about 8 minutes less than the Tenergy). The Tenergy cost $69 at HobbyTown USA and the Duratrax cost $45 from Tower Hobbies. Which brand do you guys have the best results from?

At that price you're talking non-matched packs, and it's a crap-shoot what you'll get. A flip of the coin.

its amazing what they have done with batteries. May I ask what your vehicle is?
in all honesty mr gb is right at the price point you are talking cheap batteries duratrax especially you may want to invest in lithium packs (lipo, life, li ion if you are truly worried about runtimes)
or may i suggest one of rcus sponsors

The 5000mah nimhs from cheapbatterypacks were good for me. I had 2 of these before I upgraded to lipo.

the promatch 4600 enerG packs will be a shot of roids for your rig, when spc still sold nimhs the enerG's were the best packs id ever used

i have to ask though why not make the jump to lipo? you can make the jump for very little anymore and its very easy to go lipo, once you go lipo... ya know

I have the Slash 4x4. Thanks for the info guys, I am brand new to all this and don't even really know what all the lingo is yet and which batteries are cheap and which aren't, other than the obvious factor of price difference. What is the "average" time that a good 5000 7cell nihm should last? I know this is a pretty vague question, but I seem to get a good 30 mins out of the Tenergy and about 25 out of the DTX if I'm racing pretty hard.

Well, that and once NiMH sub-C cells started exceeding 4200mah it seemed that more and more people started popping cells expecially in unmatched packs, as it seemed the cells had pretty much reached their reasonable capacity expectations. Nobody had the problem with 3000 or 3300s, but.... which just seems to make the switch to Lipo so much more palatable.

this is a great wedsite, fast shipping, cheap, and performs very very well. that would be a good website too take a look at.
i used a 5000 mah 6 cell ina rustler vxl. this one is charging above 5000 as where the traxxas power cells are decending every charge.
hope this helps

Cool website for sure! I just checked it out and now I have more questions! LOL. Can you use the 9.6V 8cell 5000mah in a Traxxas Slash 4x4? Can the Onyx 240 charge this battery? I do plan on going Lipo eventually, but I just spent a lot of money to get into this hobby so I may need to wait till later to upgrade. The charger I have now does not charge Lipo unfortunately

yes you can goo up to a 9 cell 10.8 v pack in the vxl syslem. i just got a lipo and wow, but if your charger won't carge them then you might be limited. if your charger charges 8 and 9 cell bats do it. you will have to find a configureation to fit you car. i love the costom battery packs. you will want to do the up grade (thats in the last stage of the pack).

My charger will charge up to an 8cell 9.6v battery pack. What is the advantages of going from a 7cell to an 8cell?

the advantage to 9.6v pack is that you will go faster. this will also make your esc and motor hotter faster. also, if you are comparing this the the one that comes with it, which is an 8.4v around 3000mah, and are going to get one from cheapbatterypacks.com, if you choose the 5000mah, both the 8.4 and 9.6 packs will last much longer. if you want to go faster, then go with the 8 cell 9.6v pack.

I use IB and EP 8cells and they run fine with the vxl system never over heat and plenty of power the 5000mah IB pack will take my vxl to 55mph in a pede
